GWIC clarifies greyhound euthanasia data & refutes anti’s misrepresentation

The NSW Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC) has released a statement addressing the accuracy of data regarding greyhound euthanasia and rejecting any misrepresentation of its statistics.

The commission underscores its dedication to providing information and collaborating with the industry to enhance greyhound welfare.

In response to misleading data being shared with media outlets by anti-racing activists, GWIC Chief Commissioner Alby Taylor emphasised the importance of verifying data.

Taylor stated, “We are thorough in our process of collecting, analysing and publicly disclosing data.

Sharing information with the public distorts the truth and is not acceptable to GWIC or the industry as a whole.

“GWIC clarified that out of the 18 greyhounds listed in the circulated table only four were euthanised due to injuries sustained during their race.

“Additionally two greyhounds were mistakenly counted twice while others were put down for reasons to their race.

Acknowledging that nine greyhounds have passed away at race events this year due to injuries, GWIC highlighted the industries pledge to prevent any euthanasia.

The Commissions latest quarterly injury report indicates a decrease in on track euthanasia rates.

“The New South Wales greyhound sector upholds some of the standards for greyhound welfare globally ” remarked Taylor.

GWIC will continue examining injury rates and collaborating with the industry to further enhance racing greyhounds welfare.
