High Earner’s 2009 WA Derby Win

The 2009 Brittons Formal Wear W.A. Derby confirmed Queensland's next group greyhound racing star when ($2.80) won the Britton's WA Derby by 2 lengths in 30.29 for trainer Christine Robartson.

Robartson and her husband Dave are formerly from WA and won the WA Derby in 1992 and 1994 with Eljay and Michael's Tears before heading across to QLD.

Reports are that this young dog may be even better than who they bred before selling to Melbourne connections.

High Earner was slowly away but went to the first peg in 5.77 before 13.38 and 18.76 sectional along the back before stopping the clock at 30.29 a length outside of 's record of 30.24 set last year.

Runner up was fellow Queenslander Dashing Corsair ($6.80) with third place going to South Australian Savage Shaker ($6.70).

High Earner will now head back to Queensland for their Derby and then a possible Melbourne campaign, but this time Robartson has no intentions of selling the brilliant youngster who they also bred.

High Earner has raced only 17 times for eleven wins and five placings, his prizemoney earnings took a big boost with the Derby's first prize of $35,000 taking his over all stake money to $79,870.

After the placings in the WA Derby the field finished in the following order 4th Heart Of Buderus ($19.60), 5th Benn($4.60), 6th Congratulations ($14.70) 7th Octane Show ($5.80) and ($44.60).

below is the WA Derby honour roll, this feature for age restricted dog pups was first conducted at Cannington in 1976. Since that time it has been a well sought after major event on the WA Calendar each year.

Most notable winners would be Swift Glade (1983) a brilliant sprinter who campaigned successfully in the east under the guidance of Graeme Bate. Prince Of Tigers (1997) he brilliantly won the Group 1 National Sprint final in Adelaide in 1997 and had his career tragically cut short by injury.

Reggemite(1998) arguably the best ever sprinter to come out of the west he won a Sandown Shoot Out in 1998 and was runner up in the Top Gun to the all conquering . Plus recent winner Victorian Sun Hero (2004) who also enjoyed a wonderful race career, reaching no less than 17 group race finals, for four wins and eight placings. He made five group one's winning the and amassed $316,950 in prizemoney.
