Hooksy Hits Ballarat Track Record For Six

Potential Superstar Hooksy broke 's over the 450 metres last Wednesday in the heats of the Great Western Derby.

The black son of Hondo Black and exited the red box and scorched around Morshead Park in a jaw dropping 24.94 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of 24.96 seconds jointly held by Ronan Izmir and Magic Diva.

Bred, raced and trained by the likeable Tanya and from Tatura, Hooksy has always shown great potential, even from day one. He won on debut at in the heats of the Victorian Breeders Stakes over the 500 metres and progressed to the final where he finished second, at the young age of just 18 months.

Hooksy has since posted some brilliant times across the State including a 27.10 sec at for the 480 metre journey, a 25.23 second run at his home track at over 450 metres and a super 29.95 sec run at in December.

When asked by ARG about his stable star, Jimmy Auld was his typically laconic self and although excited by Hooksy, he understands how difficult it can be to keep a fast greyhound such as Hooksy healthy, sound and racing well.

“He took his dewclaw off at The Meadows and he had five or six weeks off but he has come back more mature and stronger”, Jim explained.

“He has always shown stacks of ability but the break he had has really helped him, and he has returned flying.”

When queried about his track record Jimmy Auld said he was a little taken aback, but not totally shocked as Hooksy had been trialling well in the lead up to the Great Western Derby.

ARG asked Jimmy Auld about the final of The Great Western Derby, and he said it's just a fantastic field.

“It's a really hot field and although Hooksy now holds the track record, he just needs a few strides to hit top pace. He only needs a few metres and he will pick up pace very quickly.”

The Great Western Derby has bought together a brilliant field and Hooksy cannot afford to put a paw wrong from his middle draw.

“He's got box four in the Final and he will need to do everything right in the early part of the race”, Jim explains.

ARG can report that a big offer was made for Hooksy shortly before the heats of the Derby at Ballarat, however it was passed up, for now, according to Jimmy Auld.

“I probably should have taken it, but for now I've decided to continue on. I will see soon if it was the right decision or not.”

In the short term, the future looks rosy for the big framed son of Hondo Black, with plenty of races on offer for Hooksy, who doesn't reach two years of age until April.

The big 36kg pup has a massive motor and with sub 30 second run to his credit at The Meadows already under his belt, the skies the limit for this outstanding youngster.
