Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club honours founding father Ted Meehan
In a heartwarming tribute, the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club will pay homage to their founder, Ted Meehan during this Saturday's highly regarded Group 2 Vince Curry Memorial Final.
Meehan, who recently passed away played a role, in establishing the club and the renowned Vince Curry Memorial Race Series.
Back on May 1, 1982, Meehan took on the position of the president of the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club.
His invaluable contributions greatly influenced the clubs success that set it on a path to prominence within the racing community.
Meehans influence extended further than the Ipswich club.
He collaborated with Vince Curry, a sports director at radio station 4BC, to secure broadcasting rights for their races.
This partnership proved to be a game changer as it propelled the clubs popularity and attracted an audience.
The Vince Curry Memorial Race Series stands as a testament to Meehan's foresight and unwavering passion for the sport.
Named after the broadcaster himself, this series continues to honour Curry's impact on both the club and the greyhound racing industry as a whole.
Rob Essex, President of Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club, warmly recalls Meehan's dedication.
Essex noted that Ted and Vince Curry were truly instrumental in getting everything off the ground.
Essex mentioned, highlighting Meehan's role in gaining support from TAB (Totalisator Agency Board) and establishing Saturday night racing at the club.
He actively participated in the Greyhound Racing Control Board, demonstrating his commitment to the sport, and his contributions were widely valued within the racing community.
On Saturday night, just before the Vince Curry Memorial Series Final, there will be a race called the Ted Meehan Memorial.
This race is a tribute to Meehan's lasting legacy and his significant contributions to both the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club and the wider greyhound racing community in Queensland.
It is open to fifth grade participants, covering a distance of 520 meters.
