Maitland Hotel Challenge Series Starts Thursday

The Greyhound Club will host the heats of the Maitland Hotel Challenge Series this Thursday night.

Four of the evening's 10 races will be Maitland Hotel heats.

The first two from each heat will fill the eight barrier spots at next Thursday's main event.

Each hotel taking part in the event will be allocated a greyhound via a ballot system on the Monday preceding the race.

The winning greyhound and hotel will be presented with a perpetual trophy, which will be challenged by entrants in 2009.

The eight hotels taking part in the event are Rutherford Hotel, The Belmore Hotel, The Bradford, The Regal Hunter Hotel, The George Tavern, Hotel Tudor, The Windsor Castle Hotel and The Erringhi Hotel.

The sponsorship and promotions manager said the race would gives hotels and their patrons something to cheer for and support for the idea is growing.

It will be the first Hotel Challenge race in a number of years, but may not be the last.

“Each hotel will get a table, with their dog's number on it and they will present the winning ,” Robertson said.

“It should be a great night.

“We still have another 25 hotels in the region who have expressed interest in the race, so it looks like there might be another one.”

This Thursday's meet will also see Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore attend the showground for the Maitland City Council Cup and the Peter Balckmore Stake.

Cr Blackmore will make presentations to the connections of the winning greyhounds.
