Melbourne Storm loses Rinsed The Lot for The Phoenix
Rinsed the Lot, Melbourne Storm‘s anticipated contender for The Phoenix, has been ruled out due to a minor injury, leaving the team scrambling for a replacement ahead of the December 21 showdown at The Meadows.
Trainer Darryl Thomas confirmed the setback, emphasising that the decision was made with the greyhound’s welfare in mind.
The injury, though minor, prevents the dog from being at the peak fitness required for such a high-stakes race.
Thomas highlighted the bright future ahead for Rinsed the Lot, who has already made a significant impact on the sport.
The Storm had been meticulously preparing Rinsed the Lot for The Phoenix since September, with the greyhound posting remarkable trial times at The Meadows.
A standout performance last week included a post-to-post run of 12.74, followed by a 24.60 trial—the best of the day, even under challenging weather conditions.
With nominations for The Phoenix closing on Friday, December 13, the team’s focus has shifted to identifying a replacement.
Despite the setback, there is optimism about finding a strong contender for the prestigious $1 million-to-the-winner race.
The ongoing Hobart Thousand, Laurels, and Silver Chief series provide opportunities to select a greyhound in top form and well-suited to The Phoenix’s unique “pick-a-box” draw format.
The Phoenix Box Draw is scheduled for Sunday, December 15, and will be broadcast live on Sky Racing 1 from 11 a.m.
Despite the challenges, the Melbourne Storm remains committed to fielding a competitive representative and pursuing success in the world’s richest greyhound race.
