My Boy Brodie scores determined win in 2016 Gold Cup
MY Boy Brodie confirmed his status as Australia’s most improved stayer with a tenacious win in the Group 1 Gold Cup (710m) at Albion Park on Thursday night.
Stepping fairly from box two, the blue fawn dog was held up around the first turn as the field bunched together, with first reserve Vegas Bound shooting through to a clear lead, while race favourite Cyndie’s Magic (box six) was spat out the back.
Swinging for home on the first occasion and Vegas Bound had an eight length lead over her rivals, with Victorian greyhound Dublin Bull (box six) doing the chasing back in second, with My Boy Brodie working his way into third spot.
Down the back and the leader began drifting back towards the field, with Dublin Bull, Cyndie’s Magic and My Boy Brodie making a line of three in pursuit of the tiring leader around the home turn.
Heading into the straight and Dublin Bull was checked by Cyndie’s Magic who had to hook to the outside of Vegas Bound in the run to the line, with My Boy Brodie taking the rails run along the fence, clinching the front in the shadows of the post to score by half a length over Cyndie’s Magic in 42.17.
Lovelace (box seven) finished the race off nicely to finish third, with promising young stayer Obi Kenobi (box four) fourth past the post.
Vegas Bound tired in the home straight after a tough run out in front on the bunny, finishing sixth.
The win made it 14 victories from 57 starts for My Boy Brodie, with the Trevor Rice-trained greyhound now having won his past five starts, all over the staying trip.
