NSW Greyhound Racing Supports The Victorian Bushfire Survivors

Greyhound () in a joint initiative with the NSW Greyhound Breeders Owners and Trainers Association () will conduct a special benefit race meeting on Saturday 28 February 2009 at to support the Victorian bushfire fundraising appeal.

There is no doubt that everyone has been shocked and saddened by the events in Victoria over the last week. The benefit meeting will be an opportunity for NSW greyhound participants and supporters to come together to raise funds for those so severely affected.

Participants on the night will race for Monday night prizemoney levels, under penalty free conditions. The $15,000 difference between Saturday and Monday prizemoney levels will kickstart the industry's donation to the Bushfire Relief Fund.

Entry to the meeting will be by a gold coin donation with those proceeds and the money raised through raffles, auctions, lucky door prizes and general collection added to the industry donation.

GRNSW will also contribute revenues earned from this meeting to the final donation. GRNSW Chairman Professor Percy Allan AM said the natural disaster in Victoria has been a tragic event.

“GRNSW believes that it is fitting that we should support the relief efforts for those affected by these terrible and hope the greyhound public of NSW get behind the fundraising night,” Professor Allan said.

It is proposed that the money raised will be donated in part to the main Red Cross Appeal, but also to a special fund being and managed by Greyhound specifically to assist those greyhound industry participants that have been hardest hit. There will also be a percentage of the funds raised that will go towards the Flood Relief fund for Queensland affected residents.

GBOTA Chairman said the thoughts of the industry are with fellow greyhound participants in Victoria.

“There have been so many greyhound people in Victoria that have been hit hard by these bushfires and this our way to help support them in their time of need,” Mr Mangafas said.

Anyone wishing to provide support for the night including raffle items or donations can contact the GBOTA on 9649 7166.
