Owners Search For First Group 1 Joy In Paws Of Thunder Final

Australian Socceroo Tim Cahill and co owner Con Hansimikali will be hoping their investment in Fancy Dean pays big dividends this Saturday night (October 1), as the blue dog lines up in the 2011 Greyhound Recorder 520 metre Final.

Saturday's final, which is worth $100,000 to the winner, will be Fancy Dean's first Group 1 Final appearance since debuting in January this year.

Fancy Dean has already recorded four placings in other Group events over the past nine months, including the; Group 2 (3rd), Group 2 (2nd), Group 2 Bulli (3rd) and Group 2 (2nd).

Bringelly based trainer Walter Lutiger believes the son of Where's Pedro x Sweet Fancy is the ideal greyhound to mentor.

“He is a bloody good dog, I wish I had another dozen just like him,” Lutiger said following last week's semi-final win.

Part owner Con Hansimikali is of the same opinion.

“I had a dog before him (Fancy Dean), Fancy Al which had won a couple at in good time.

“Fancy Al had to be retired due to an injury, but then Fancy Dean came on the scene,” Hansimikali explains.

“And it has been a great experience.

“I purchased him from Denis and , who bred, reared and broke in the dog, they do such a great job,” Hansimikali said.

Hansimikali came to know fellow co owner Tim Cahill back when the Australian Socceroo's and Everton midfielder was just 13 years of age, with Hansimikali's son playing Soccer with Cahill through junior ranks in Sydney's West.

The relationship however has developed in more recent years with Hansimikali's daughter now dating the youngest of the three Cahill boys, Chris.

“Tim (Cahill) was home last year and we got talking about how I owned some greyhounds and he said he would be interested in part owning one day.

“I suggested part owning Fancy Dean together and that's how it all started, and he has been an enjoyable dog to own,” Hansimikali said.

Should Fancy Dean beat home his rivals on Saturday evening his winnings will be taken to just over $175,000, a treat for all involved with this magnificent greyhound.

First race will go at 7.27pm for Saturday's Greyhound Recorder Paws of Thunder. Gates will open at 5.30pm, with plenty of oncourse activities planned for the evening.
