BOB Dempsey was full of smiles on Sunday after landing the biggest win of his training career in Saturday's 2 Auction Series (520m).

Dempsey puts the polish on back marker Pyro Bob which was able to overcome a slow beginning from box three, cutting straight down the fence and railing through to in the charge around the first turn.

From then onwards it was a case of times and margins, with Pyro Bob kicking clear to score by one-and-one-quarter lengths over the fast finishing Slick (box five) in 30.59.

“He is only a pup but he is a bit slow out – once he gets going he lets fly,” Dempsey told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“There were a lot of really good dogs in the race last night and I didn't think he could win.

“I was just hoping if he missed the start the good dogs might jam up on the outside and he could slip through which is exactly what happened.

“When he got to the lead and turned coming for home came over to me and said ‘you're home Bob'.

“I was happy as when he went up the back in front.

“It was a big thrill.”

Pyro Bob, owned by , has now won eight of his 34 starts with a further six minor placings.

Saturday night's victory also took the son of Fear Zafonic and Terrific Style's career earnings to just under $90,000.

Dempsey says the white and black greyhound has a bright future over further ground which is planned for him in the near future.

“It would have been the biggest win of my career,” Dempsey said.

“I have always had dogs – we've had some good ones and some bad ones over the years.

“This fella is going to be a really good dog – once I get him over the 600m he will be a different dog again.

“It takes him a while to get going but down the back he really lets go and then he keeps going.

“He is only a young dog so I haven't tried him over the middle distance but I think he will run it out fine.”
