SA Sprint Championship Box Draw

Last night at Angle Park there were three fantastic Heats of the SA Sprint Championship where the first two placegetters from each heat and the two fastest third placegetters qualified for next week's 3 Final.

The fastest qualifier for the Final was the trained Significant Bit who made full use of his inside draw in Heat 2 to punch through and lead on the first turn before racing away from his rivals to win by 3½ lengths from Lucerne Lass and Fire in a sizzling 29.69 for the 515m journey. Bob will be hoping that Significant Bit can replicate the efforts of his champion chaser next week who took out the title in 2007 however the son of Bit Chill and Swift Sphinx was dealt a blow to his chances at the box draw after drawing the squeeze box 5.

One of the favourites for the series in Fire Tyson for Tony Lagana who didn't have a lot of luck in his heat after drawing wide fared much better in the box draw drawing the converted red box and will now be one of the top picks.

The first Heat was taken out by the trained Kalden Komoto who also made full use of his inside draw to race just behind tearaway leader Golden Monza early before racing to the front of the back straight and going on to record a solid 3 length victory from Cousin Callum who ran home nicely and Golden Monza who battled on well for third a further 1½ lengths away. Kalden Komoto continued his excellent form in feature races and returned a solid time of 29.80 for the 515m however box 6 in the final will test the son of Premier Fantasy and Pamela Rose.

Fresh from the Group 1 Heats where he was unplaced, Cousin Callum showed that he will be a threat in the final after drawing box 2 and with his speed and stamina could be the greyhound getting home hard at the business end next week.

The golden run of the Bosco Stamenkovic kennel continued in the final Heat when his star chaser Koombooyana Girl recorded her sixth straight win in recording an all the way victory by 8½ lengths in a flying 29.74. She again showed speed from the boxes to lead comfortably and from there was never headed with Carlos Tyson and the unlucky Kalden Kurageous battling out the minors. She is now the clear favourite for next weeks final and with a clean beginning box 4 should not pose too many problems.

Kalden Kurageous was rated a strong chance last night against the Stamenkovic flyer however he found plenty of trouble during the run and did a good job to run third however as the slowest third placegetter he was declared the first reserve for next weeks final.

The $36,000 Final will be run next Thursday night 17th January. It will be race 8 on the program and is to jump at 9.11pm (SA time). It will be a super nights racing with not only the Group 3 Final but also the John Gray Memorial Heats programmed for Grade 5 greyhounds with eight strong Heats anticipated.
