Sheba Wins Mudgee’s Brian Cleaver Trophy

Aberdeen greyhound trainer has backed up from his Country Challenge success earlier this year to collect the $1300 Brian Cleaver Final at Mudgee Greyhounds on Sunday.

The Lawson trained won the final in convincing fashion, the only dog to go under 18 seconds for the day in a time of 17.63.

The trained Sonic Wirraway finished second with a gap of five and a quarter lengths an in a time of 18 flat whilst the dog Source Code ran in third by three and a half lengths in a time of 18.25.

After travelling from Moree to race on Saturday, Lawson said it was very rewarding for Sheba to win the final.

“It certainly makes the trip worthwhile,” he said.

“It is the only dog I have here today and sometimes you wonder if you will break even with all of the travelling I have to do.”

Lawson also commented that Sheba perfected her run today.

“She has been known to miss the jump on occasions but today she started great.”

“I thought she might also struggle in the wind but it did not phase her much at all.”

When presented with the Brian Cleaver Final trophy, Lawson told the audience he loves preparing his dogs in the country circuit before taking them elsewhere.

And there is no doubt Lawson's dogs love the Mudgee track, the trainer says it is one he has attended for many years.

“I raced Future Fund here for the Country Challenge almost nine months ago and he won,” he said.

“I have a fair bit of experience at this track, I used to come here 20 years ago when the dogs ran on a night.”

Local trainer also had great success on Sunday as he collected two wins in the first and third races of the eight race program.

In the Church St Vet Hospital Maiden over 311metres, Brennan's Carado Prince finished in a time of 18.42, edging out the Victor Ellis trained Uno Sinclair by three and three quarter lengths.

The second of Brennan's winners was Carado Twister in the Hargraves Stakes again over 311 metres and running a time of 18.41 to beat the John Barrass trained Acola Reign by two and a half lengths.

The next Mudgee Greyhounds meet will be December 13 and the presentation of the Mudgee Guardian will be held at the final meet on December 20.
