Skye a fantastic shot of qualifying for Canberra Cup

will be aiming to cement her spot in the upcoming Group 1 Megastar when she heads to the Australian Capital Territory on Sunday to contest a heat of the Group 3 Cup (530m).

Trained by Jason Fletcher, the daughter of Goodesy and Light Fantastic will jump from box two in the third of six heats on Sunday evening, taking on a classy field that includes Ella Has Class (box one) and Good Odds Angel (box eight), with the blue bitch coming into the series having won six of her past eight starts since resuming from a short spell.

“She hasn’t missed the top two since coming back from her break, so I think it did her the world of good,” Fletcher told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“She had a few minor injuries and so I decided to give her a bit of a freshen up. It all coincided with when I was moving to a new property, so it worked out quite well.”

With his kennel star enjoying a hot run of form, Fletcher decided to keep her mind fresh by heading towards Canberra rather than having a crack at the Bob Payne Spring Sprint heats at this Saturday.

“I had to go down to Canberra with a couple of other dogs a few weeks ago, so I took her down to trial before the first race and she went 25.08 and won by about 15 lengths.

“With the Cup coming up I decided to have a go at it. I think she is the sort of dog which likes new tracks – so I took the chance to take her away from Wentworth Park.

“She has just turned three years old and she has had over 30 starts now, so it is good to move her around a little bit to keep her mind on the job.”

A winner of 18 of her 36 starts, Fletcher is expecting the blue bitch to perform well over the weekend and says if she happens to qualify he thinks she will improve heading into the $25,000 final on September 11.

“I think she will go good on Sunday. The distance and track suit her perfectly – it is a frontrunners track and I think she will run a big race.

“Whatever she does this week I think she will improve on if she makes it into the final– she has never been out of the 530m boxes there so after having a look this week I think she will find a bit extra.”

A half-sister to 2015 Group 1 winner , a win in the would virtually guarantee Fantastic Skye a spot in the 2016 edition of the race, with five greyhounds invited to take their place alongside the three placegetters from the Megastar Prelude, with the final set to be run on September 22.

“After the Canberra Cup I am hoping she will get an invitation into the Dapto Megastar – she likes the track there so hopefully her resume gets her a start.

“She has won a group 2, run third in a group 1 and she is also a finalist – you couldn’t ask too much more from her.

“She is just a dog which is an absolute pleasure to train – she doesn’t stop wagging her tail from the time you open her kennel door until she goes to sleep.

“Every time she goes to the races she is thereabouts – she jumps well and puts herself into a good spot – she is pretty much the perfect dog.”

The Group 3 Canberra Cup heats are races three to eight this Sunday night, the first of which will jump at 5:42pm.

The winner of each heat plus the two fastest seconds will progress through to the decider.
