Sweet It Is Storms Home To Claim 2014 Sydney Cup
Dynamic bitch Sweet It Is gave her rivals a cold in the home straight to claim the 2014 Group Three Sydney Cup at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.
The Darren McDonald trained daughter of Mogambo and Off Springer (Flying Penske – Skullring) was in sixth position when the field passed the post the first time. Despite finding her share of trouble, the 29kg bitch still managed to produce her trademark withering run home and score by 3 1/2 lengths in a time of 41.84 just 0.06 outside her personal best time at the Glebe circuit.
After being sent out $2.20 favourite, Sweet It Is left box six in her usual tardy manner. Zipping Maggie (5) exited the traps swiftly and carved out a formidable first section of 16.00, Space Star (9) was hot on her heels and, for the bulk of the race, it appeared as they had the event between them.
Just when Space Star had drawn level with Zipping Maggie off the back and it looked as though those two would settle down to fight it out, Sweet It Is began to make some ground. In the twinkling of an eye she applied the afterburner’s and careered past her rivals as though they were in reverse to claim the $25,000 winners cheque. Zipping Maggie prevailed to finish second with Space Star in third place.
The Sydney Cup was Sweet It Is’ fourth Group win, the other three all being Group Ones. She has now won 12 career races from 42 outings and amassed over $464,000 in stakes earnings.
