Taree super track reopening nears despite 8 month delay
Despite being eight months overdue, the long-awaited reopening of the new Taree Super Track is finally getting closer, according to Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW).
Following a multimillion-dollar revamp that kicked off in October 2023, the track is reportedly gearing up to resume races by late August or early September.
GRNSW optimistically planned for the Super Track to be back up and running by January 2024.
Other than admitting to some “setbacks”, the extended delay in reopening the track remains unexplained by GRNSW.
The mid-north coast greyhound venue has undergone something of a revitalisation, with the grass surface making way for a sand track, the installation of a “cutting-edge” chase lure system, and a brand new tower facility.
Peter Cassar, the Manager of the Mid North Coast Greyhound Racing Club, expressed his excitement about the prospect of racing at the newly reopened venue.
“The implementation of the safe chase lure system looks like a great move for everybody,” Cassar said.
“The first loads of sand have been delivered and spread out, and it’s not just the track that has had a facelift.
“The new tower facility is a stack of prefabricated shipping containers that were assembled on site.
“The old kennel block had four kennels for swabbing, but we’ve added another eight swabbing bays to the side of it.
“There’s a new maintenance shed and new access roads to the 300m start and boxes.
“We never used to have car access to that 300m start, so this is a real game changer.
“I’m excited by what we’re going to achieve here.”
No return date for Taree greyhound races has been officially announced yet, but when it does return, they will race in a premium Wednesday night slot previously awarded to Richmond greyhounds.
