The Exodus Continues
The exodus of Tasmanian greyhounds to race interstate will continue tomorrow when smart bitches Miss Roman Nose and Clyde's Angel will be transferred to Kel Greenough's Melbourne kennels.
Members of the highly successful Collide – Ricky's Angel litter, the pair are raced by Rowella's Terry and Betty Penny and at their most recent run provided the quinella in the $7,430 Jet Pets Animal Transport Tasmanian Oaks (515 metres) conducted at the Tote Racing Centre in Launceston on Monday night.
Aided by a better box draw, Miss Roman Nose led from the outset on that occasion and had a length to spare at the wire as a heavily supported $1.60 favourite, her time a very smart 29.91.
The bitch has now won seven races in succession and ten of her 18 lifetime outings, while accumulating stakes of almost $20,000.
Despite Miss Roman Nose having a superior record to her litter-mate, Terry Penny considers that little separates her and Clyde's Angel ability wise.
“Miss Roman Nose led on Monday night from the red box and Clyde's Angel received a slight check early in running from the blue,” he explained.
“Only a length separated them at the finish and if the boxes had been reversed the result may very well have been different.”
Clyde's Angel has won eight of 19 lifetime outings and stakes of in excess of $15,000 and another of the litter in Penny's Angel, which also won on Monday night, has won three of 14 lifetime and stakes of in excess of $5,000.
Terry Penny experienced some anxious days leading up to the Tasmanian Oaks when bad weather prevented him working his team as he would have liked.
“The heavy rain limited the use of the circle track and then fog set in making it difficult for trainers to use the straight track, so going into the race I thought my pair may have been a little under-done, but thankfully they proved me wrong,” he explained.
Miss Roman Nose and Clyde's Angel also provided the quinella in the Tasmanian Country Oaks conducted at Tattersalls Park in Hobart on May 10.
Meanwhile former leading trainer Ted Medhurst was back in the limelight on Monday night when his former New South Wales chaser Tadmore Dunoon was successful in the $7,430 Rapidvite Tasmanian Derby Final (515 metres).
A regular feature race winner before a lengthy disqualification, Medhurst showed that he has lost none of his ability by producing the Collision – Baretta Betty black dog cherry ripe for his big assignment.
In winning the rich event in the time of 29.87, Tadmore Dunoon recorded his fifth win in succession and has now won seven of 16 lifetime outings and stakes of in excess of $13,000.
Veteran trainer Maurie Strickland's race favourite Rewind, also a member of the Collide – Ricky's Angel litter, experienced little luck in running and finished at the rear of the field, but may also campaign in Victoria in coming weeks.
