Topgun fields unveiled: Explicit earns favouritism
The 2024 Group 1 Topgun and Group 1 Topgun Stayers fields have been announced.
From the initial list of 36 invitees for the Topgun and 20 invitees for the Topgun Stayers.
By the close of nominations, 24 sprinters accepted for the Topgun and 20 stayers accepted for the Topgun Stayers.
Today, the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Club (MGRC), who run racing at The Meadows, have announced the final fields for both feature Group 1 races.
Jason Thompson looks to have a significant hold over the Topgun, worth $150,000 to-the-winner, having secured starts in the Group 1 sprint with Explicit, Excavation, and Flying Zulu.
Thompson can also count Tim Zoo as the first reserve for the big race.
Explicit smashed through the 29 second mark, at Sandown Park night on Thursday night with a flying 28.97 in a Melbourne Cup Prelude race.
Four finalists from the 2024 Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park will also gain runs in the Topgun, headed by winner Blue Kermaro.
Hector Fawley rounds out the select eight greyhounds for the Group 1 race over 525 metres.
The 2024 Group 1 Topgun Stayers field has also been named with the eight accomplished stayers vying for the $75,000 to-the-winner first prize.
Ritza Piper and Valpolicella were again selected to run in the elite eight dog field after running in last year’s 2023 Topgun Stayers.
