Vic greyhound trainer suspended for alleged baiting offences
Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) Stewards have suspended a Victorian greyhound trainer, effective immediately, following an investigation into alleged luring and baiting offences.
The investigation stems from a targeted inspection conducted last month by GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit Investigative Stewards at a property in North Central Victoria. Evidence obtained during the inspection pointed to potential luring and baiting activities.
On Friday, December 27, 2024, the trainer was officially suspended while enquiries continue.
The investigation will also examine possible breaches of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTA).
GRV CEO Stuart Laing reaffirmed the organisation’s strong stance against such practices.
“We have made it very clear that the industry has zero tolerance for any baiting offences, which not only impact animal welfare but also undermine the integrity of the sport and damage the reputation of the greyhound racing industry,” Laing said.
Laing commended the efforts of the Integrity Unit, stating, “I would like to acknowledge the work of GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit, which has led to the identification of these alleged breaches and the swift action that has been taken.”
He emphasised that the Integrity Unit remains highly vigilant and committed to investigating allegations, assessing evidence, and addressing any breaches.
This includes potential criminal violations under Victoria’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 and offences under the Rules of Racing.
