Young Greys Hope To Emulate The Great Flying Amy

This Thursday night the feature racing continues at Albion Park with heats of the listed Classic 520m. The age restricted event has attracted five outstanding fields with all chasers a realistic chance of qualifying for the rich final and joining the list of past champions, including; (2011), Cosmic Rumble (09), Woops A Daisy (03) and Greasy Grizzly (02).

The event has been a great form guide for and this year looks to be no different with the winner and finalists sure to go onto bigger and better things.


A great race to start the program and a heat full of potential with all runners capable of winning and running quick time. Kulu Special for Bentley owner trainer John Clarson exits box four in the opening heat and the baby chaser is certainly that. The veteran of only 3 starts, the November 2011 daughter of Trewly Special – Kulu Mystique is a flying machine. Having raced solely at headquarters the black 23 kilogram lightweight has been nothing short of brilliant. A maiden win in 29.99 (BON) by 12 lengths and a last start 30.25 (BON) shows that she is a greyhound going places and she will be hard to beat in the series. With her age and ability she is a greyhound going places and will be one to follow throughout her career.

Jimboomba trainer Neil Catchpole looks to have another smart pup in his kennel with the red brindle bitch Sparkles drawn ideally in box one, her fifth consecutive start from the cherry. The daughter of – Betty Davis Size only just qualified for the heats having been whelped on the cut off date of 1st December 2010. Whilst being the oldest pup in the series she seems to relish the cherry red having won three of her last four starts – all in best of day times including a lightning 24.90 at Ipswich at a first look 30.09 at headquarters. If she can reproduce that run she will prove hard to beat.

The Reid family will look to put recent bad luck behind them with the beautifully bred Far West Leader. Having produced in feature events already in her short career, the 27 kilogram black daughter of Magic Sprite – Bellbird Park will look to add another feature final to her resume as she jumps from box 7. The veteran of 10 starts, the June 2011 whelping has the outstanding record of 5 wins and 4 placings, including best of night wins at Albion Park and Lismore winning her last three on end.

It wouldn't be a feature series without the Apap's and in the first heat they have another offspring of the brilliant producer Tad Smarter engaged in Grundon who will exit the five box. The son of has been ultra consistent in his racing and has the enviable record of 7 starts for 4 wins and 2 placings. Although he hasn't run quick time, he is a greyhound on the improve and from the smart kennel will be primed for this event and a quick run wouldn't surprise.

Fernvale trainer Lynne Ivanovic boxes impressive young chaser Leonard in heat two. Drawn the pink rug, the May 2011 son of Collision – River Seine has been ever consistent in his short career and already has a slick 30.10 Albion Park win to his credit from April this year. The 35 kilogram chaser has won in quick time at Ipswich and if he is on song he will prove hard to beat after drawing favourably.

After having no luck in the recent Mick Byrne Memorial heats, Burpengary trainer Gary Keep will be hoping for better luck this week with his charge, Gotcha Back. Having drawn the white rug, the February 2011 black son of Mogambo – Gotcha Covered has shown ability in his career with his overall record standing at 35 starts for 8 wins and 6 placings. He can be ordinary out of the boxes and connections and followers will hope that this week he can improve and be off and gone at box rise.

The A Team sire Fear Zafonic has been doing great things at stud of late and the son named in his honour lines up in heat two for Gatton trainer Christina Apap. Drawn the horror box five, Zafonic (Fear Zafonic – Joy Esme) will look to continue his good form at headquarters where he has already registered 3 wins and 2 placings from just 6 starts over the 520m distance. An unreliable beginner, the draw may be of advantage if he can avoid early trouble at turn one and position himself in a winning position coming for home.

Park Ridge trainer Ray Burman brings Poetic Mover back to town for another feature series having recently contested heats of the Mick Byrne Memorial and the 3 Big Dog Cup. The January 2011 son of Knocka Norris – Bomber Babe has a best time of 30.05 at headquarters and a repeat of that performance will see him one of the fancies in heat two. A strong finisher, he will be storming home late if given clear running and will be another of the winning chances in heat two.

The Dart's return to town and another feature series with their Dec 2010 whelping, Ben's House (Run's House – Spirit Released). A dog of huge potential he has recently featured in the Mick Byrne Memorial series running a good third in the final behind Pharmacopia. It's another tough field this week, but if consistency counts, the 33 kilogram chaser will be one of the fancies in heat three after drawing well in box 2. A noted ordinary beginner a good start this week will definitely help his chances against this quality field.

Ipswich Auction finalist and another son of Tad Smarter, Clan Eirann fronts up for another feature series after drawing box four in heat three for Caboolture trainer Steve Lennon. The January 2011 son of Collision – Tad Smarter has enormous ability and has won in fast time at both Ipswich and Albion Park in his short career so far. Whilst his recent form isn't his best he does a have an outstanding 29.98 PB at headquarters and if he leads they will be racing for second.

Race caller nightmare Knocknagoshel headlines heat three after drawing the horror box for owner trainer Michael Broody of Churchable. The July 2011 son of Knocka Norris – Top Talker has enormous potential as evidenced by his overall record of 8 starts for 5 wins including fast wins over the Albion Park 520m and the shorter sprint circuit. A last start BON winner where he greatly improved his box manners, followers and connections will be hoping he can repeat his first section in this weeks heats and avoid any early interference.

Futurity finalist Cee Eh Oh (High Earner – Suite Tahlia) for Lake Clarendon owner / trainer Bruce Linnan looks another strong chance in heat three after coming up with the green rug. The December 2010 chaser has continued on with her consistent form after the futurity final where she finished unplaced behind Purcell Bale earlier this year. Recent form includes winning a heat of the Mick Byrne Memorial where she placed 5th in the final. She can show box speed and her 520m strength is improving with her 520m record at Albion Park standing at 13 starts for 2 wins and 7 placings. She will need to improve on her PB to win this but her form indicates that she will be there come the finish.

Leading trainer boxes top local hope Top Story in heat four of the series. Top Story (Knocka Norris – Bomber Babe) has an outstanding PB of 29.77 over the track and distance set prior to his injury late last year. His overall record is 21 starts for 12 wins and 6 placings and the bridle dog has been a finalist in the group 2 Qld derby since his injury return. While not running sub 30 seconds since his return, the brindle dog has a huge motor and if he can avoid trouble early he will be well positioned come the right time in the race.

Londonderry trainer Anthony Azzopardi heads north with his young charger Maya Keroma coming up with the perfect cherry draw in heat four. The January 2011 daughter of Where's Pedro – Cinnabar has been impressive in her short career with fast wins at Gosford and wins at Wenworth Park. From just ten starts the brindle bitch has won 4 with 2 placings. It looks an educational visit for the youngster but take notice she will be competitive from the astute Azzopardi kennel who is no stranger to big race success throughout Australia.

Lowood trainer , no stranger himself to big race success, engages local young gun Seize The Bomb in heat four. Drawing box three, the black daughter of Bombastic Shiraz – Seize The Moment is lightly raced having had just the five starts for three wins and one placing. The 30 kilogram bitch has tremendous box speed and is a fast winner at Ipswich and Albion Park in her short career. With her early speed and in the hands of the experienced Kay, Seize The Bomb will be well fancied to progress to next weeks final.

Llittle sister to box one runner Maya Keroma, Jacks Zac joins her in the trip north from NSW for owner trainer Susan Pitstock of Mangrove Mountain. Draw the visitor box and wearing the blue rug, the 29 kilogram chaser joins a field of big weighted bitches in heat four. With wins at Gosford, Maitland and Wenworth Park, the young white and black bitch has the imposing overall record of 15 starts for 4 wins and 7 placings for close to $9,000 in prize money. She is a definite chance with her early speed and ability.

Knocka Norris has been a revelation at stud producing fast offspring throughout Australia. Another of his sons, Frosty Jay Jay (Knocka Norris – Slick Hannah) lines up in box eight for Fairney View trainer . Recent form includes a 29.94 BON win at headquarters, followed by a heat win (30.72) and a final placed 3rd at Ipswich has the big 36 kilo grey in outstanding form. A freshener up the Capalaba straight where he won last start in 20.05 looks to have him primed for this listed series where he will be one of the fancies to progress and improve his overall record of 17 starts for 7 wins and 4 placings.

The Joe Menary owned and trained Celtic Diva has been a model of consistency winning over $26,000 dollars in prizemoney with the outstanding overall record of 28 starts for 10 wins and 8 placings. Another offspring of the great Collision – Tad Smarter litter, she has already made the final of the Group 2 Bogie Leigh Futurity and looks a strong chance to progress to another final named in honour of another great Queensland bitch. She possesses blistering early pace with a first section PB of 5.63 and overall best of 30.20 seconds. If she can jump in front she will be hard to beat in the run to the post.

Baby chaser, White Hornet (Cosmic Rumble – Skinny Magic) starts from box three in the fifth and final heat for Park Ridge mentor Ray Burman. The veteran of just 3 starts all of which are at headquarters has seen the impressive return of 2 wins and 1 second with a best of 30.23 set last Thursday night. With improving box manners and his race experience improving he will be a strong contender to progress to the rich final.

The second Reid runner and litter brother to earlier chance Far West Leader will start from box 7. Miner's Moss (Magic Sprite – Bellbird Park) has been ultra consistent in northern NSW winning 6 of 12 race starts. Wins have come over the shorter journeys at and Maitland, as well as a recent 520m win at Lismore. The 32 kilogram black chaser has only just stepped up in distance and with his strength and ability improving will be a strong chance to progress through past the heats for the popular Reid family.

With all engaged greyhounds a realistic chance of qualifying for next weeks final, the racing is sure to be exciting as only the five heat winners and three fastest seconds to progress. It's a great night of racing at Albion Park with three heats of the Group 1 Macro Meats Gold Cup also on the card, attracting the best stayers both local and interstate. The first race commences at 6.42pm local time.
