The Gardens track history

The Gardens Greyhound Track is an Australian racecourse in Newcastle, in the state of New South Wales. The greyhound racing complex is also known as Ladbrokes Gardens.

Formerly called Breakers Stadium and Topper Stadium, The Gardens Greyhound and Sports Complex was home to the Newcastle Breakers, who played in the old National Soccer League (NSL) between 1991 and 2000. The club was ousted from the league due to financial constraints.

The Gardens greyhounds was also home to the rugby team Hunter Mariners, which played in the Super League in 1997, before becoming obsolete.

How did the Ladbrokes Gardens transition from hosting soccer and rugby matches to greyhound racing?

After Newcastle Breakers left, the Gardens stadium was dormant until 2005, when significant transformations were made, giving way to Newcastle’s main greyhound racing venue. Apart from greyhound racing, the Gardens Sports Complex still hosts rugby and soccer games, with Wallsend FC, which is the oldest soccer club in Newcastle, as its current resident.
