Maitland Gold Cup history
The event—now commonly known as the Maitland Gold Cup—was inaugurated in 2003 as a Group 3 race at the Maitland track. In that first running, Thread Prince recorded a winning time of 26.74 seconds over 457 m on a grass surface, with connections pocketing a modest prize of $12,000.
After the 2003 running, the race was skipped in 2004 while the track underwent significant upgrades. The conversion from a grass surface to a more weather-resistant loam track also saw a slight change in the racing distance (settling in around 450 m), and the event has been held annually ever since.
In its early years, the race benefited from strong local backing. For its first two editions, the race was sponsored by the Maitland Supporters Club. By 2006, the Maitland branch of the Greyhound Breeders Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) joined as co-sponsors, underscoring the event’s growing stature in the community.
A major turning point came in 2010 when the race was upgraded to Group 2 status. That year, Reg Kay’s Elite Blue Size became the only greyhound to win the event twice—first collecting a $25,000 cheque in 2010 and then increasing the prize to $30,000 in 2011.
Commercial sponsorship evolved over the years. In 2014, PPK Mining stepped in as a sponsor, marking the beginning of increased prize money and heightened media attention. Today, the race offers a $40,000 prize for the winner, and it remains one of the marquee Group 2 events on the greyhound racing calendar at Maitland.
In the 2023 Group 2 Maitland Cup over 450m, Len Me Dad edged ahead with a 1/4L win. Trainer Ruth Matic’s guidance was key as Len Me Dad maintained composure to take victory.
