Four of Australia’s fastest greyhound gunslingers will take aim at the $20,000 winner-takes-all Group 3 Shootout at Sandown Park this Thursday night.
Last start Group 1 Sapphire Crown winner Queen Lauryn will lead the assault on Sandown’s riches and will be joined by fellow Queenslander Made To Size.
Made To Size took his first Group 1 scalp in July when he took out the Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park. Trainer Reg Kay has kept his gun sprinter in the holster for the past three months, but is sure to come out firing on Thursday night.
Mantra Lad and One Tree Hill have been charged with defending the home state from the northern raiders.
One Tree Hill is a veteran of 81 race starts but the four year old is racing in career best form.
She used box 1 to full advantage when winning the Group 1 Paws of Thunder, then swept from the outside box to run third in the Group 1 TAB Topgun at The Meadows.
Mantra Lad has been a sprinting revelation since winning the Group 1 National Distance Championship at Wentworth Park in August. He was beaten by 1.25 lengths by One Tree Hill in the Group 1 Paws of Thunder, winning his semi final in 29.73, and found trouble when 5th in the Group 1 TAB Topgun.
Waiting in reserve are recent Group 2 Geelong Cup winner Birthday Boy, and eight-time Group finalist Trew Millions.
The Group 3 Shootout will be run at 9.35pm Thursday 13 November and will be supported by eight Schweppes Melbourne Cup Preludes. Gates open from 6.00pm and the first race will be run at 7.09pm.
