Good Odds Cobber takes Temora Cup for Frank & Tracy Hurst

Good Odds Cobber added another chapter to his remarkable career, taking out the 2025 Group 3 Temora Cup with a powerful late charge to claim victory over Speedy Pie and Sooty Keeping.

The Frank and Tracy Hurst-trained star showcased his class and track sense, navigating a competitive field to secure the $40,000 winner’s cheque.

Jumping from box one as the $2.60 bookmaker favourite, a draw he has thrived from throughout his career, Good Odds Cobber settled behind the early leader, Speedy Pie, who set a strong pace from the outset.

As the field turned for home, the son of Fernando Bale surged to the outside and unleashed his trademark finishing burst, hitting the line in 25.52 to win by 1.75 lengths.

The victory takes Good Odds Cobber’s career earnings past $800,000, further cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile sprinters in the country.

The black chaser has won at tracks ranging from Bulli to The Meadows and now adds Temora to his growing list of successes.

Frank Hurst admitted post-race that the decision to target the Temora Cup wasn’t initially on the radar, but the dog’s adaptability and a beneficial inside draw made it an ideal opportunity.

“It was something that wasn’t thought about much at first, and then it’s pretty hard to get a run with him because he naturally uses a free draw,” Hurst said.

“Someone said, ‘Mate, you can’t go there without a trial,’ so we came down, trialled him, and he went alright. Then we raced him here the other night, and he ran second. The box draw was kind to him again, and we knew then he had a great chance.”

Hurst also praised the dog’s versatility, pointing to his ability to perform at a variety of tracks as a major strength.

“He’s just a dog for all types of tracks, isn’t he? Whether he’s winning at Wenty, Bulli, or Temora, he just gets the job done.”

Runner-up Speedy Pie put in a game effort, leading for much of the race before being overhauled late, while Sooty Keeping finished strongly to grab third.

The performance leaves Hurst with the obvious choice of the 2025 Golden Easter Egg as the next target.
