2015 Group 2 WA Derby final – free tips, form and runner comments

THE greyhound racing spotlight will shine on this Saturday night with the final of the Group 2 WA Derby and four heats of the Group 2 WA Oaks.

The Derby has attracted a high quality field, with boom youngster Dyna Double One the $1.80 favourite with William Hill despite being drawn awkwardly in box five. The son of Barcia Bale and Crystin Bale, trained by Andrea Dailly, recorded a sizzling 30.10 in his heat, recording his 10th victory at start 19.

The gun youngster will have to be at his absolute best to contend with some of WA's finest in the $40,000-to-the-winner feature, including Paul Stuart's Tureaud. The regally-bred son of Kinloch Brae and Starlight Delly, currently $2.35 with William Hill, will exit box one where he is two from two and over the track and trip where he has won 10 of his 16 starts.

The only other runner under double figure odds with William Hill is the Jason Thompson-trained Berzerk which will be looking to go one better than in his heat where he ran a gallant second to Dyna Double One. The white and brindle chaser has been a model consistency throughout his short career to date, finishing in the money in 18 of his 23 starts, many of which have been against some of the top chasers in Victoria.

The Group 2 WA Derby is race five on the card and will jump at 10:30pm AEST.

Lets check out the form of each finalist, with comments from Australian Racing Greyhound‘s tipster, Brad Bugeja.

Box One – Tureaud
Black Dog – 30.1kg – November 2012
Kinloch Brae x Starlight Delly
Trainer: Paul Stuart
Career: 19:11-2-1
T/D: 16:10-2-1
T/D Best: 30.10
Career Highlights: 3RD 2014 Group 3 final, WON Cannington 30.10, The Meadows 29.72.

“Huge talent which exploded out last week and looked ultra impressive when scoring in 30.37. After beginning well he was never really pressured in running and he was able to score with plenty in hand. He is likely to cop a little more pressure in running tonight but I think he can go to another level and he has won here previously in a sizzling 30.10. From the red draw he should be able to hold the early lead and he is my tip for the final.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $2.35 with William Hill

Box Two – Nero Bolt
Black Dog – 32.8kg – January 2013
x Lochinvar Coco
Trainer: Nick Minutillo
Career: 23:11-2-3
T/D: 18:8-2-3
T/D Best: 30.49
Career Highlights: WON Cannington 30.48, Mandrah 27.51

“He is currently racing in career best form and he turned in a great performance to score in his heat in 30.73. The time wasn't flashy but due to his racing pattern they never are. If he can balance up midfield and the gaps open mid race he is a genuine place hope. He is going to be very big odds and he could add value to the exotics.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $17 with William Hill

Box Three – Berzerk
White and Brindle Dog – 32.6kg – March 2013
Makeshift x
Trainer: Jason Thompson
Career: 23:10-5-3
T/D: 1:0-1-0
T/D Best: 30.60
Career Highlights: WON Ballarat 25.26, Geelong 26.06, The Meadows 30.01, Sandown Park 29.44.

“Classy Victorian chaser which can run some serious sectionals when he lands on the lure. He was soundly beaten by Dyna Double One in his heat last week, but that was his first look at the track so I'm expecting him to improve on that run. With a clear passage tonight he should be in the mix for a long way and he could hang on for some minor money.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $8 with William Hill

Box Four – Fun Boss
Black Dog – 30.4kg – July 2013
Kinloch Brae x Alotta Fun
Trainer:
Career: 16:8-5-2
T/D: 11:6-4-1
T/D Best: 30.43
Career Highlights: WON Cannington 30.43, Mandurah 22.79, 27.67.

“Explosive beginner which led for a long way when placed in his heat. He was a tad disappointing last week considering that he won here the week prior in a brilliant 30.47. He does his best racing when he can lead and dictate the terms and I can't see him getting his own way tonight, so it would be a big surprise to see him feature in the finish.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $23 with William Hill

Box Five – Dyna Double One
Black Dog – 33.9kg – March 2013
Barcia Bale x Crystin Bale
Trainer: Andrea Dailly
Career: 19:10-4-2
T/D: 3:2-1-0
T/D Best: 30.10
Career Highlights: WON 2015 Group 3 , The Meadows 29.43, Wentworth park 29.55, 3RD 2015 Group 1 Silver Chief Classic, FINALIST 2015 Group 1 .

“Ridiculous talent which is capable of just about anything when switched on. Last week he managed to step cleanly and find the lead in the early stages and from there on it was a procession. He is clearly the most talented chaser in the field but the middle pin is a big leveller. He has a fair bit of speed drawn on either side so he is a bit of a risk tonight but he still must be respected.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $1.80 with William Hill

Box Six – Aphorism
Black Dog – 34.0kg – July 2013
Collision x Fantasy Royale
Trainer: Shaun Evans
Career: 14:7-3-1
T/D: 1:1-0-0
T/D Best: 30.59
Career Highlights: 2ND 2015 Group 3 New Sensation, WON Dapto 29.95, 30.57, Wentworth Park 29.84.

“Talented NSW chaser and he overcame his first real challenge when scoring here last week in a speedy 30.59. He has won seven of 15 overall and the majority of those wins have been in impressive times. If he can get away on terms tonight he should get a nice cart across and he has the talent to cause an upset.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $18 with William Hill

Box Seven – Crashing Packs
Black Dog – 31.0kg – February 2013
Knocka Norris x
Trainer: Steve Shinners
Career: 23:9-7-2
T/D: 8:0-4-0
T/D Best: 30.46
Career Highlights: WON Mandurah 22.52, 27.47.

“More than capable on his night but he can do a lot of things wrong in the early stages of his races. Last week he was soundly beaten in his heat but he managed to hit the line nicely and he was far from disgraced. He is likely to be giving away too big of a head start again and I can't see him making an impact. Keep an eye out for him when he steps up over the longer journey.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $31 with William Hill

Box Eight – Katsuro Sahara
Black Dog – 29.1kg – December 2012
x Uno Emi
Trainer: Michael Johnston
Career: 34:11-8-4
T/D: 3:1-1-1
T/D Best: 30.46
Career Highlights: WON Cannington 30.46, Manduarh 22.67, Mandurah 27.36.

“Very fast beginner which is capable of reeling off very fast sectionals when out in front and untouched. Tonight's race features an abundance of early speed so he is going to have a very difficult time crossing and therefore I can't really see him hitting the scoreboard.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $34 with William Hill

1st Reserve – Tiggerlong Await
Black Dog – 32.6kg – December 2012
Fabregas x Tiggerlong Petal
Trainer: Paul Stuart
Career: 19:10-3-2
T/D: 2:0-0-1
T/D Best: 30.74
Career Highlights: WON Sale 24.76, Shepparton 25.25, Ballarat 25.50, Geelong 25.78.

“Big talent and he was a tad unlucky when placed in his heat last week. Four starts back he posted a scorching 27.24 Mandurah win and if he reproduced that type of form he would be a serious winning prospect. If he happened to gain a start he would be worth an each way ticket.”

Odds to win the WA Derby: $17 with William Hill

2nd Reserve – Astronomize
Red Brindle Dog – 32.5kg – November 2012
Kinloch Brae x Starlight Delly
Trainer: Paul Stuart
Career: 18:8-3-2
T/D: 10:5-2-1
T/D Best: 30.05
Career Highlights: WON Cannington 30.05, Mandurah 27.26, FINALIST 2015 Group 1 Perth Cup.

“Perth Cup Finalist and he has won six of 11 over this trip. Like Tiggerlong Await he is capable of great things on his night and if he somehow gained a start he could make a big impact.”
