Wentworth Park racing tips

The calm before the storm descends upon this Wednesday night as an 11-race program will be the final meeting before the biggest night in greyhound racing – this weekend's meeting. On the program this Wednesday are heats of a nice maiden series, a 0-3 wins staying race, some very competitive fifth-grade races, and plenty of runners backing up from last week's heats. It will be a great night of chasing and there will be lots of value winners to be found. Hopefully we can find you one or two.

Best Bet: Esme Watson (Race 6)

We tipped old Esme when she won her first ever race here at Wenty back in July last year at healthy odds, and while she won't be those odds tonight, she can certainly add to her record of three wins and four minor placings from 13 starts. Her win off box five here in 29.88 was impressive and any repeat of that performance wins this hands down. She is a much better greyhound drawn down near the fence, and from the inside three boxes she has four wins and seven placings from 12 attempts. She has a good turn of early pace and, with a slow beginner drawn under her, should be humming along the fence early and holding them all out to the first turn, which is where you want to be at Wentworth Park. From there it would take Cookie or Bob Hatfield to stop her winning.

Danger: Zipping Mercedes
Likely to start the favourite after being beaten narrowly last week by Got The Feature in a heat of the New Sensation, but the time wasn't flash and she does do an awful lot wrong. She walked out again last week and that cost her race, but she does have a withering final section. If she can be within a couple of lengths of Esme turning for home, Zipping Mercedes can definitely nail her. She would prefer to be drawn down closer, though.

Next Best: Spring Whiskey (Race 1)

This youngster from the Scott Board kennel ran into a good one in the form of in the series. He was beaten nine lengths in the time of 29.6 and clocked a respectable 30.35 himself. With some natural improvement, along with having seen the track in race conditions, not to mention the fitness improvement of his first full 500m, this should stand the son of and Cosmic Blend in good order to open his account. He had box one last week and railed well, while he did cop a bit of trouble in the run. That said, there is no One Hot Bandit in this race, and from the perfect draw there is no reason this boy shouldn't jump well, rail through at the first turn and race away for his first win at headquarters.

Danger: Typhoon Ethics
He is another that was in the Magic Maiden series, running a credible second to . He also did a lot wrong in his debut and will certainly derive benefit from the whole race-night experience. His run home was very good, and if he has a touch of luck from out wide and can find a position around the first turn, he can certainly worry them at the back end of the race.

Best Roughie: Khaleesi's Jewel (Race 10)

This is the final chance for this strikingly marked all-white girl. She possesses good speed and ability but is just not bringing her best at the moment. She will need to lead this field and establish a race-winning break if she is to break back into the winner's circle. She has been in battlers' class for a bit now, and maybe the return to a fifth-grade sprint at Bulli might have sharpened her up for this. It is always difficult to find the winners in the battlers' race, but there will always be value aplenty in these races. If this girl can land on the bunny, she just may give you a massive sight at massive odds.
