Bundaberg Greyhound Racing Club embraces sand track transformation

Bundaberg

The Greyhound Racing Club is embarking on a transformation by switching its track to a sand surface in 2024.

This major project aims to improve safety, simplify track maintenance, and create greater opportunities for the sport in the region.

The transformation will involve laying a sand surface, repositioning the 460-metre start, and realigning the rail to ensure smoother turns.

These changes will result in a racing surface that addresses safety concerns and makes track maintenance easier.

By transitioning to a sand track, Bundaberg will be able to host more races, accommodate race meeting growth, and potentially even welcome transferred meetings.

(RQ) will work closely with the club to finalise the project details before appointing contractors this year.

“We rely on experts in and racing safety when making decisions about greyhound tracks in Queensland,” explained RQ CEO sco.

“Since all two turn tracks in the state already use a sand surface, including , which is currently being constructed, it's fitting that we convert Bundaberg as well.”

This transformation aligns with the club's vision for growth while adhering to industry standards.

“We take pride in being the last grass circle track in Queensland, but we understand the importance of adapting to ensure the future of the sport in our region,” said Stephen Bland, President of the Bundaberg Greyhound Racing Club.

“We are excited to a sand surface and collaborate with Racing Queensland to drive our growth within the industry.”

Alongside converting the track, the club has recently made infrastructure improvements.

These include a tower for judges and broadcasts, an upgraded rail and system, an improved catching pen, replacement fencing, and a sectional timing system.

These enhancements enhance both safety and the racing experience for all participants.
