Carruthers’ Journey Back To The Top

Castlereagh duo John and have always been highly respected trainers, breeders and stud masters, having put the polish on some of our Countries best chasers including inductee . With the attention squarely focused last Saturday night on the $250,000 final taken out by Grigorieva Bale, the Carruthers team stole the spotlight early on with a magnificent back to back group winning double, where in the space of 25 minutes they claimed the Group Three Magic Maiden and Group Three New Sensation finals with their two charges; Clockwise and Charmed Assassin.

Going into the Magic Maiden final as an outsider, Clockwise was rather awkwardly boxed out wide with a speedy beginner in Chevy Silverado too her right. Nonetheless, the daughter of Carruthers boom sire Magic Sprite and Elizabeth Royal didn't put a foot wrong as she led from start to finish in a solid time of 30.01, starting Carruthers night off with a bang. No sooner had finished the presentation and collected the $25,000 winners' cheque, his wife Jane was cheering profoundly behind the boxes as Charmed Assassin emulated his kennel mate's performance by beginning in brilliant fashion from box three and fought off a late charge from the strong finishing Fast Archer, saluting in a time of 29.76. Also a progeny of the Magic Sprite out of recorded his 11th win on Saturday night from just 19 starts, an extraordinary start to a career for any youngster, with undoubtedly more success to transpire.

‘Journey Park' is the brainchild of the Carruthers family and plays host to one of the hottest sires on the market; Magic Sprite. Given as a wedding gift to their daughter Courtney, Magic Sprite was retired from racing duties after just 11 starts where he saluted in 10, as the sole focus shifted to his stud career which has paid vast dividends for the family on and off and the race track as the son of Brett Lee and Glamorous' popularity has sky rocketed during recent times.

The Carruthers story began with their champion race dog Rapid Journey, who won a spectacular 6 Group One races during his career and set the Australian prizemoney standard that was only recently broken by and then . ‘Carl' as the son of Amerigo Magic and Miss Courtney was known to his family and many followers, also eventuated in the stud ranks as a boom sire producing sensational second offspring including; Symmetry, Regal Thyme and Nellie Noodles. Sadly Rapid Journey's passing in 2010 left a huge hole at ‘Journey Park' where one dog was responsible for the foundation of an empire that now illustrates true greyhound excellency.

The Carruthers family has been blessed with many accolades both on and off the race track for a number of years, yet scrupulous preparation and dedication are the essential ingredients for any budding greyhound enthusiast, who strive to capture group winning glory as John and Jane experienced in the finest of ways last Saturday night.
