Recently celebrating his second birthday, flashy Varvatos enters the GRNSW Country Challenge Showdown final as a live chance to take the winner’s cheque of $10,000.
Prepared by GregoryBoard who also trains fellow finalist Montana Belle, his Country Challenge journey was very selective with a three town plan enough for the white and red dog to secure automatic entry into the Showdown final.
At only his eighth career start, Varvatos won a heat of the Bathurst leg comfortably but couldn’t repeat the dose a week later in the final when third in a field that was littered with talent.
Next stop was the grass track at Coonabarabran, where he recorded a straight sets victory, scoring the maximum eight points for a final win. Sent out punters elect in both his heat and final, Varvatos didn’t let his followers down with the unlucky Drive Up running second place in both races to him.
Varvatos’ racing style is spectacular as he likes to ‘walk’ out of the boxes and fly home like a locomotive. This type of racing can be thrilling to watch but is fraught with danger as shown at Dubbo where he ran into wall after wall of greyhounds while attempting to carve through the field.
A four time visitor to Wentworth Park, his best time of 30.12 in winning a qualifying heat of the Peter Mosman Classic in May would place him up to his neck in the final with only Mountain Of Love recording a faster time there.
With lady luck on his side, look for the breathtaking Varvatos flashing home down the straight in search of an illustrious victory.
