Country Challenge Showdown Field Is Set
After more than 200 greyhounds across 28 race tracks have competed in the Country Challenge series, it now comes down to the ultimate finale at the headquarters of greyhound racing.
Token Mulwee has taken all the headlines so far with a victory in the series by accumulating the most points from 14 appearances, defeating Montana Belle by five points and taking the $10,000 bonus. But the five and a half year old greyhound, possibly the oldest racing greyhound in the country, will have all the work to do if it is to pull off an unlikely victory on Saturday night with a top class field set to compete.
Token Mulwee leads the field of the top eight greyhounds that accepted the invitation to compete for the $20,000 prize money pool.
Montana Belle is also there as is early favourite Mountain of Love.
Injury plagued Bim Bam Boom is fit and ready to challenge for the Showdown trophy as will Majestic Puzzle and Future Fund.
The Greg Board trained Varvatos joins its kennel mate Montana Belle in the field while John Lawson not only has Future Fund but the last direct entry into the field of Our Elite Belle.
Greyhound Racing NSW Chief Executive Brent Hogan said the concept of the Showdown was to encourage more greyhounds to continue racing in the Challenge series across the 28 races and that is exactly what has happened.
“The quality of the Showdown field is attributable to the way owners and trainers have taken to the Country Challenge concept and the race will be a fitting finale to the 2008 Country Challenge,” Mr Hogan said.
$10,000 is on offer for the winner of the Showdown with second place receiving $3,000, third
$2,000 and all unplaced greyhounds will receive $1,000.
