Cuthbertson And Wilson’s Puppy Championship Trifecta
Owners Karlene Cuthbertson and Sally – Ann Wilson were all smiles following the $5,500 Betfair Puppy Championship Final (452 metres) conducted at the Devonport Raceway on Tuesday.
All three placings in the rich event were filled by chasers owned by the pair, who have enjoyed a remarkable run of success since becoming involved in the sport in Tasmania a couple of years ago.
Originally declared a reserve, the Mick Stringer prepared Captain Cosmic ( Cosmic Rumble – Icy Popsicle) prevailed, with the Butch Deverell prepared Pak And Wrap (Where’s Pedro – Smart And Sassy) taking second prize and another Stringer kennel occupant in Molly’s Legacy (Where’s Pedro – Smart And Sassy), filling third berth.
Captain Cosmic was slow to begin, but accelerated up to second placing nearing the turn and then headed Pak And Wrap on straightening, before scoring by a length in the time of 25.99.
Stringer was quick to compare Captain Cosmic with another member of his team in New Recruit (Paddy’s Flame – Miss Bardie), at the presentation ceremony.
“I won this race with New Recruit last year and I believe that Captain Cosmic could be every bit as good if I can improve his box manners,” he explained.
“He’s only 22 months old and has already beaten some pretty good dogs during his short career – he has tremendous mid-race speed.”
“I was over the moon when he gained a run and went into the black box because I knew that he would be suited from there.”
New Recruit has further enhanced his impressive record since winning the Puppy Championship and is the winner of 24 of 49 lifetime starts while accumulating a purse of in excess of $51,000.
Meanwhile the impressive Bearville Phil (Give Me Five – Von’s Angel), another Stringer prepared chaser, continued on his winning way at Tuesday’s NWGRC meeting.
The Gerard Allford and Steven Bird owned chaser staged a two-dog war with Speed Direct (Paddy’s Flame – Inbetween Days) in the lane, before eventually prevailing as a well backed $2 commodity in the Dowling McCarthy Tyres Grade 4 (452 metres).
Bearville Phil recorded the time of 26.32 in winning and has now won six of 14 starts and earned stakes approaching $10,000.
The Ted Medhurst prepared Mr Everywhere (Pure Octane – High Sienna) recorded the fastest time of the meeting, a slick 25.82, in winning the thedogs.com.au Grade 4 (452 metres) event on Tuesday.
Medhurst was also seen in the winners circle with the well related Zorro’s Legacy (Bombastic Shiraz – Fallen Zorro), which recorded the time of 26.15 in winning the Surepick Tier 3 Grade 5 (452 metres).
Another Southern trainer to score a win was Richmond‘s Margaret Rossendell, who took out the Tasfreight Tier 3 Grade 5 (452 metres) with the impressive Franklin Bluboy (El Galo – Franklin Delight).
