Master trainer Butch Deverell is quietly confident that Nooee’s Lad (Knocka Norris – Break Of Dawn) can win Thursday night’s $10,000 Tattsbet Maiden Thousand Final (461 metres) to be conducted at Tattersalls Park in Hobart.
The chaser was the fastest qualifier for the rich event when he scorched to a 26.18 four length victory in his semi-final last Thursday night and then drew the coveted red box in this week’s finale.
“In a race such as this it is hard to be confident of success, but I think Nooee’s Lad will give plenty of cheek, particularly now that he has drawn the red box,” Deverell explained on Monday.
“Last week his early sectionals were outstanding, faster than the invitation in fact, so I believe that he is in with a big show.”
It is many years since the trainer was successful in the Maiden Thousand with the smart bitch Our Charlene and he is very keen to once again experience the thrill of winning the race.
“I don’t specifically save my greyhounds for the event, if they are winning I let them continue through the grades and this year I actually thought that Palooka (Dyna Lachlan – It’s A She) had a better chance of succeeding, but that was not to be,” he explained.
“Palooka was run out in his semi-final leaving me with Nooee’s Lad, which has always showed outstanding ability.”
Nooee’s Lad was having his sixth start last Thursday night when he broke through for Burnie businessman Craig French, who has previously enjoyed success from the Scott Bryan kennel with the chaser Just Casual.
“Craig purchased Nooee’s Lad as a pup in Sydney and actually reared him himself – he did a great job,” Deverell explained.
Thursday night’s Maiden Thousand Final has brought together a field of highly promising young chasers, with most of Tasmania’s leading trainers having a representative.
Mangalore mentor Ted Medhurst, once labelled “the king of the kids”, will box the highly promising Direct Sonic ( Cosmic Rumble – Wongawillicath), which is unbeaten in two outings and sure to be improved.
Mick Stringer, also from Mangalore, will be represented by Hindsight (Aston Galilee – Patsy Anne) which is also unbeaten in two outings and possessed of undoubted ability.
Former champion cyclist Neville Allison of Dilston, has qualified Dilston Tinka (Knocka Norris – Dilston Jewell) for the rich event and she also has a great winning chance.
Rod Ransley of Brighton has Lily Rocket (Brett lee – Lily Eve) flying and she may very well prove to be Nooee’s Lad’s main rival from the white box.
Female trainers Loretta Luttrell of Moonah and Eileen Thomas of Invermay will be represented by Street Talk (Talk’s Cheap – Card Sharp) and Go Sush (Cosmic Rumble – Amanda) and Allen Anderson of Mangalore has qualified Lashing Rose (Big Daddy Cool – Jamella Sarah).
