Dublin Bull scores an upset in Group 2 Summer Distance Plate
DUBLIN Bull stunned racegoers at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, producing a stellar front-running performance to capture the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate (720m).
Starting from box three as a $20 shot, Dublin Bull speared the lids and rolled straight to the early lead over Runway Bono (box four) and Miss Foxy Lee (box five), setting the pace by two lengths at the post on the first occasion.
Through the catching pen, Dean Swain‘s Runway Bono loomed as a threat for the lead, but Dublin Bull kicked away and taunted his rivals ‘catch me if you can’.
Swinging for home and it was still Dublin Bull high-balling out in front, with race favourite Burn One Down (box seven) beginning to weave his way through the pack from the tail of the field.
Despite his rivals’ best efforts, half way down the straight it was clear there was going to be a boilover, with Dublin Bull too classy for Burn One Down which flashed home to finish two-and-one-quarter-lengths off the winner.
Young gun stayer Ebby Ripper (box eight) also produced an eye catching performance to clinch third, with Runway Bono tiring in the concluding stages to finish fourth.
Trained in Victoria by Jeff Britton, Dublin Bull clocked 42.45 en route to claiming the $40,000 winner’s cheque, with the victory taking his career record to 21 wins and 13 minor placings from 69 starts.
It was also the biggest victory of his career and a well deserved one at that, with Saturday’s feature the seventh group race final he has contested throughout his career.
