The Darren Anderson trained Groovy Beyond looked all over a winner when he got a big break down the back, but Baranbali kept grinding away and over the last few strides poked his head out to win by that margin in 28.02.
On a day that started very ordinary for Athol, the win would be a great fillip, as he trains a small team of mostly “give aways.”
In another close finish Late Kooringa and Bralyn Alvin hit the line together in the Paul Wasson Electrical stake. Opinions were divided on the result, and after a close perusal of the print, the judge gave the nod to Late Kooringa by a half head. The time recorded was 23.30, the best of the day over the 411 metres. Mitch Northfield owns and trains the winner who has now had four wins from ten starts.
The trainer of the runner up, Brad Northfield, didn’t have to wait long to avenge the defeat when littermate to Bralyn Alvin, Bralyn Midge, won the Casino RSM Club stake. He started from an unsuitable box eight, and after an early buffeting worked his way across to be outside the leader as they went down the back. Asserting his superiority at the point, he raced away to win by 4 1/2 lengths in 27.89.
Two heats of the Betfair Blue Paws maiden were run and Peter and Helen Simpson supplied both winners. The litter sisters of Sobbing Destiny and Sobbing Promise both had the dreaded box five, and both led all of the way. Destiny ran 27.83 in a one length win, whilst Promise clocked 27.69 in a 2 1/2 length victory.
Lismore trainer Trevor Thompson also trained a double with his familiar “Rose Hi” dogs. Melly Rose Hi opened up proceedings when she won her maiden by 1 1/2 lengths in 23.53, while Sam Rose Hi was impressive by leading all of the way in the Supervite Hi Performance stake. He held off Piccolo Baccio to win by 3/4 length in 27.88.
Firefly Curly ran the best time over 484 metres when she led throughout to clock 27.49 for Chris Supple, and Maverick made it two in a row, when he raced right away with the Ranvet stake. He clocked 23.45 in a 5 1/4 length win.
Bill and Sheila Smith followed up their success of last week when Tsunami Tears was never headed in running 23.42, whilst Proper Lucy railed through on the home bend to win the Charcoal Inn stake by 1 1/2 lengths in 23.36.
In the remaining race Oh My Papa opened up her winning account at Casino with a 36.02 win in the distance stake.
This Friday’s meeting (Christmas Eve) is our last meeting for the year, and the club would like to wish all that have supported us a happy festive season. Race time and kenneling times will be as normal.
