Favoured chances make Cannington Winter Cup final but not without an upset

Electrified will be favourite to win the 2023 Listed Winter Cup at Cannington after winning his heat in 29.58, and drawing box one for the final.

The favoured chances of Electrified and Elite Machine both made it through to next week's final of the 2023 Listed Winter Cup at Cannington, but one of greyhounds could only manage third behind a West Australian (WA) greyhound racing star on the rise.

Prior to the running of the two heats, the only two dogs punters wanted in greyhound betting were Electrified in the first heat, and Elite Machine in the second heat.

In the first heat the -trained Electrified did not let punters down.

Exiting box seven a -125 favourite with greyhound betting sites, the son of Aussie Infrared and Miss America, raced up outside early leader No Limit Needed through the first corner, before kicking clear for an easy win in 29.58 by 2.5 lengths.

No Limit Needed fought back a late challenge from the Shayne Williams-trained to narrowly secure second, with Nangar Chief 0.03 lengths away in third.

My Time ground out a solid fourth to make next week's final for Damien Crudeli, after always being thereabouts in the run.

Electrified's win represents a nice return to form for the 2022 Group 3 Young Stars Classic winner, after an unsuccessful trip to Victoria resulted in two unplaced runs there at Sandown over 515m.

The 2023 Group 1 Perth Cup runner-up at Cannington (520m), recently finished just out of the placings in the inaugural The Sandgroper slot race, a week after finishing third in the Listed Lew Dorsa Memorial Trophy final, with both races over the same track and trip.

Bred, owned and trained by Krystal and , Electrified has now had 38 starts for 21 wins and 12 minor placings, earning the Shinners family $273,290 in prizemoney.

He will go into next week's final a short priced favourite after drawing box one in the $19,950 to-the-winner final.

Electrified has had nine career runs from box one for six wins, two seconds, and a third.

No Limit Needed (Zipping Garth x Rekall Kelsos) will be racing in her first black-type final next week, having had 45 starts for 11 wins and 18 placings for owner Jodee Jennings.

The Christine Robartson bred and trained bitch was sent out at greyhound odds of +520 for the heat, and by finishing second, has so far won $64,725 in career earnings for .

Nangar Chief, owned and trained by Shayne Williams, did well to be just edged out to finish third as a +830 chance with greyhound bookmakers.

The son of Feral Franky and Little Nangar is a litter brother to rising stayer and The 715m runner-up at The Gardens, Nangar Rocket; and to 2023 Listed Chief Havoc Cup finalist at Gunnedah, Red Hot Frankie.

He will be contesting his first black-type final next week after 19 starts which have netted eight wins and six placings.

My Time ( x Mercedes Dior) for Damien Crudeli snuck through to next week's listed final after running fourth.

Coincidentally, running fourth is becoming something of a habit for My Time, who also ran fourth in both the Listed Mandurah Derby at Northam, and the Group 2 WA Derby at Cannington.

My Time was backed in to +470 second favourite with greyhound betting apps prior to the jump.

My Time has had 23 starts for seven wins and seven minor placings.

In the second and final heat of the 2023 Winter Cup, Elite Machine was just supposed to win and win easily, with greyhound punters crunching the -trained 2023 Group 1 Perth Cup winner in to -166.67 at box-rise.

But Paul Stuart's Barbeque Man, who was priced a +230 second favourite, had not read the script.

The son of My Redeemer and Phosphenes took the lead early from box six and made every post a winner to lead almost throughout in 29.76, winning by one length over ‘bolter' Katchoo +2050.

The odds-on favourite Elite Machine finished third four lengths from the winner, with Dandalup Blazer +930 a further length away in fourth.

2023 Listed Winter Cup Heat 2 (Cannington, 520m) – Barbeque Man (29.76) T: Paul Stuart

Barbeque Man did well to race up outside Dandalup Blazer early and showed determined chase to cut that greyhound off on the first corner before taking command of the race.

The Cameron Mackinnon-owned chaser has a good dog's race record of 11 starts for six wins, and three minor placings, earning $37,115 in prizemoney despite the Winter Cup heat being his first start out of 5th grade company.

Katchoo (Dyna Villa x Cheekers) gave Damien Crudeli his second 2023 Listed Winter Cup finalist finishing a surprise second after using box one to advantage throughout the run.

The Amanda Crudeli owned dog has had 14 career starts for two wins, four seconds, and three thirds; but remarkably, given his low win rate, he has already made two other listed finals this year, running unplaced in both the Canning Trophy, and the Lew Dorsa Memorial Trophy finals.

The 2023 Group 1 Perth Cup winner, Elite Machine, did well to run third after half missing the start and striking plenty of trouble in the early half of the race.

The Jamie Marsh-trained, and -owned, son of Aussie Infrared and Pat's Lass has had 35 starts for 19 wins and four minor placings, earning connections $365,595 in prizemoney.

In addition to the Perth Cup, Elite Machine won the 2023 Listed Lew Dorsa Memorial Trophy, and ran third behind Crumble Monelli in the inaugural 2023 The Sandgroper slot race.

Dandalup Blazer was the final greyhound through to the Winter Cup final, and was desperately unlucky not to have finished closer after finding plenty of trouble in the race.

Dandalup Blazer has won five of 19 career starts for trainer , with a further six placings.

The son of Mepunga Blazer and Dandalup Girl will be contesting his first black-type final, after failing to gain a run as reserve for the 2023 Group 2 WA Derby won by Crumble Monelli.

The Listed Winter Cup final will be run next week at Cannington on June 10, with $19,950 on offer to the winning connections.

The box draw for the listed final was done trackside after the heats and has delivered Electrified the advantage of the rails draw, while Elite Machine and Barbeque Man will have to contend with boxes six and seven respectively.
