Fernando Mick takes out G1 Hobart Thousand final

Fernando Mick wins the Hobart Thousand
Fernando Mick zips away to win the G1 Hobart Thousand on Thursday night.

Victorian trainer David Geall continued his outstanding run of form in 2022, claiming his first Group One Hobart Thousand Final on Thursday evening in the state of Tasmania.

Fernando Mick was a well-supported favourite at $2.50 with fixed odds bookmakers from box two, after an impressive victory in his heat last week clocking a time of 25.63 over the 461m.

Punters also gravitated towards fellow Victorian star Paua Of Buddy in Hobart Thousand betting, starting at $2.70 from box eight.

When the lids flew, Nyah Nyah Flyer stepped slowly off the inside giving Fernando Mick plenty of room to challenge early leader Isurava from box five.

Paua Of Buddy got into second position as they turned for home and put up a brave fight to eat into the winning margin, however the son of Fernando Bale and Noaki Moth held on to salute in 25.78.

Local chaser Rojo Diamond, who was attempting to secure his sixth straight victory, lost no admirers in finishing third from box six for Robin Grubb.

Fernando Mick has now won four of his past five starts, which were all contesting group one finals, after suffering a narrow defeat in the Group One Melbourne Cup Final in November.

It was the 29kg pocket rocket’s 32nd career victory, with the $100,000 in first place prizemoney, taking his total stakes earnings to over $500,000.
