Gem Of A Series At Gawler
There are many unique races run at the Gawler greyhound track and last Sunday one such event was programmed. The Ken Brereton Memorial Super Challenge is a series run over different distances, at successive meetings. The long running event has been contested in recent years over only 2 distances. This year, with the 400m distance now available at the track, it was decided to have the greyhounds show their versatility over all 3 trips.
Points were awarded for each position in each of the 400m, 531m and finally the 643m distance. Leading into the final run, we had Aston Thomas lead the way with 16 points for Troy Murray closely followed by kennel mate Bandanna Lad on 15 points, and both Black Satanic for Bob Isaacson and Only Jess for Angela Modra in joint third position on 14 points.
The final round was an exciting affair with Jessenia Bale for Shaun Matcott finding her very best form to lead throughout, and claim the final race in the series. After being midfield on points (13) her 8 points for victory was good enough for her to claim third position overall on 21 points. Aston Thomas looked to have the series wrapped up when he landed in second position early and was going strongly.
However Bandanna Lad, after a slow beginning, really got motoring during the middle stages and flew home to grab second, relegating Aston Thomas into third place. With Bandanna Lad claiming 7 points and Aston Thomas 6 points, this meant the Ken Brereton Super series was jointly won by the Troy Murray kennel mates. As a result, the additional trophies and bonus cash had to be shared between the joint owners, but everyone was pleased with the result.
The Gawler Greyhound Racing Club would like to thank all those trainers who supported the 3 distance Ken Brereton series and we are hopeful it can continue to prosper in the future. We would also like to acknowledge the generous support of the Ken Brereton Family Jewellers of Gawler, who have long been supporters of the Club and provided the magnificent trophies for this event.
On Tuesday, it was back to the normal racing program, with only leading trainer Shaun Matcott recording a double with Lektra Chapman and Aldo Bale being successful.
Regular racing continues at Gawler on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, with the next fortnightly twilight being set down for Sunday 19th February.
