Golden Greys Summer Carnival returns to Albion Park

The upcoming Albion Park Golden Greys Summer Carnival promises an anticipated return this year with over $2.3 million in prizes spread across eight race evenings.

The carnival is set to start on December 5, 2024, with the Queensland Flame worth $90,000.

The Queensland Flame race will decide who will represent Queensland in its slot in The Phoenix at The Meadows with a prizemoney pool of $6 million.

The $112,500 Group 2 Queensland Derby and Bogie Leigh Futurity are scheduled for January 2, 2025, the $150,000 Group 2 Golden Sands will be run on January 9, 2025, and the $375,000 Group 1 Gold Bullion will take place on January 30, 2025.

The Group 1 Gold Bulllion stands out as the feature race of the whole Golden Greys carnival.

The carnival will also include the $150,000 Group 1 Gold Cup for the stayer at Albion Park, and the $75,000 Group 3 Vince Curry Memorial at Ipswich on February 1, 2025.

Jason Scott, the CEO of Racing Queensland (RQ) claims the Golden Greys Summer Racing Carnival has become a go-to racing event, saying, “The Golden Greys Summer Racing Carnival has established itself as the must-race destination from December to February.

“We are excited to again kick off this year’s Golden Greys with the Queensland Flame to decide our representative in the world’s richest greyhound race, before we continue to shine the spotlight on our local talent through the QGOLD evening.

“The program remains attractive to the nation’s best sprinters, middle distance types, and stayers, and we look forward to welcoming the best dogs and trainers from all over the country to Queensland this summer.”

Incoming Queensland Greyhound Racing Club (QGRC) CEO Peter Gleeson is excited about the prospect of eventually holding the Golden Greys Summer Carnival at the new Q racing complex.

“We know Queensland in summer attracts so many tourists, and now locals and visitors alike have an extra reason to join us for what is now the pre-eminent summer greyhound carnival in the country,” Gleeson said.

“The club is justifiably proud of what we’ve built over this summer period and it just goes from strength-to-strength each year.

“With The Q coming along nicely, and wagering turnover on the dogs at record high levels, there’s much to be optimistic about going forward.”
