He Knows Uno Thunders Home To Win 2010 Brisbane Cup

New South Wales Northern Rivers greyhound trainer Mick Patterson scored his first win last night, when his talented youngster caught tearaway leader Octane Show in the shadows of the post to win the 2010 Group 1 .

The son of Primo Uno and Honeymoons Over, who doesn't turn two years of age until tomorrow was very impressive in both his heat and final of the Group 2 Cup, and brought that form to , winning both his heat and last nights final with his trademark run to the line.

Having now had just the 16 starts for 8 wins, 6 placings and career earnings of $71,900; the 32kg black dog already had a 29.96 Albion Park 5th grade win next to his name, and with a hot pace set by Octane Show he managed to claim last night's $55,000 first prize by the barest of margins in 30 seconds even.

It has been a hectic time for the Iluka based trainer as He Knows Uno has been on the of many judges and the subject of several offers to purchase the dog, but Patterson is taking it all in his stride.

“I was happy when he ran third in the Ipswich a couple of weeks ago, Let alone winning the Brisbane Cup.”

“He just went so well in the Ipswich Cup, I thought let's give it a go. He'll probably have a break now over Christmas” said Patterson speaking on after the race.

Box 8 proved to be the blessing for He Knows Uno as Octane Show bolted from the boxes to the race to the lead and establish a 6 length lead over the race.

Aided by Octane Show's quick beginning, He Knows Uno was able to slide over from his wide draw and miss the tightening inside and always had Octane Show in his sites.

Getting clear to the back the trained Octane Show was low flying running sectionals of 5.74 and 11.43, but it was evident He Knows Uno was always going to make a run at the ex Victorian.

Knuckling to the task he got within 4 lengths of him mid way through the home corner and drifting to his outside he continued the barnstorming run to be within 2 lengths with 50 metres to run, and lengthened stride to nail the race favourite right on the line.

The official margin was just 0.12 of a length or a head with Diamond Stan using box 1 to advantage to finish a further 6.37 lengths back in third spot.

Equal favourite Red Rocket was led easily by Octane Show early and despite getting in to second and third as they entered the back straight, he proceeded to give ground and race wide, finishing well back in sixth.

It was a finish befitting of a Group 1 race and one that firmly stamps He Knows Uno as a greyhound worthy of the title, winning the race in the sixth fastest time since 1993 when the Brisbane Cup was first conducted at Albion Park.

The only greyhounds to have gone quicker were El Galo (2008 – 29.84), Pororoca (2005 – 29.66), Bogie Leigh (2003 – 29.85), Tricky Creek (2001 – 29.97) and the immortal Flying Amy (1995 – 29.89).
