An independent audit by the University of Western Australia has confirmed the fairness of Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s (RWWA) greyhound race box draw system.

The statistical analysis, conducted by the Centre for Applied Statistics, examined over 52,000 races across various Australian states and territories to assess the algorithm’s performance.

Key findings from the report include:

  • 52,223 races were analysed, spanning 4,881 meetings held between January 2020 and December 2023.
  • The data included 17,975 unique greyhounds, 5,024 unique owners, and 2,177 unique trainers.

No evidence of bias was found in:

  • Individual greyhound allocations (overall p-value: 0.0453).
  • Allocations of greyhounds owned by the same owner (p-value: 0.572).
  • Allocations of greyhounds trained by the same trainer (p-value: 0.345).
  • Allocations to neighboring boxes for trainers with two greyhounds in the same race (p-value: 0.736).
  • Of the races analyzed, 37,730 had eight runners, and 15,118 races featured at least one trainer with two greyhounds, with no irregular patterns detected.

  • The audit applied Monte Carlo permutation tests and statistical corrections, including Bonferroni and False Discovery Rate methods, ensuring a thorough and accurate assessment.

The results affirm the integrity of the RWWA box draw system, demonstrating its ability to allocate greyhounds fairly and randomly.

This conclusion strengthens confidence in the process and highlights the operational standards upheld in greyhound racing.
