Jeff Britton expects better from Weblec Jet in Murray Bridge Cup final

Victorian trainer Jeff Britton believes three-year-old Weblec Jet (both pictured with after winning the 2021 Cup) can be competitive in the $35,000 Daish Irrigation and Fodder Cup (455m) on Sunday night.

Star Victorian trainer Jeff Britton is expecting Weblec Jet to have learnt a lot from his first run at Murray Bridge – a respectable second in last week's heat – going into Sunday night.

That is when he will start as one of the favourites in the $35,000 Daish Irrigation and Fodder .

The three-year-old is at $4 to win with greyhound betting sites.

But he will have his work cut out against Fantastic Victor at $3.50 for Oswald Chegia, and She's A Hotshot, who ran a blistering 25.11 seconds for Troy Murray at Murray Bridge on January 21.

Britton is confident his versatile runner took enough out of last week's run to be competitive from box two on Sunday night.

“Last week he was running home well after never previously being on the track, so hopefully after having a look he might make better decisions,” he told australianracinggreyhound.com.

“He went to go around a dog on the home straight, but if he went underneath he probably would've won the race.

“And the race before was not ideal for a preparation at Murray Bridge. He had 600m and won really well at .

“He's sort of a 600m dog now, but he does go very well over shorter distances.”

Britton said a good start would be crucial for his runner who loves finishing well in staying events.

“He's a really good dog, but he might not have the pace of the others,” he said.

“I'm hoping he can get a bit of a clear run because he'll be finishing on at the end.

“I wish it was another 100 metres.”

Weblec Jet will have no shortage of supporters on Sunday night.

“It (a win) would be really good because it's up to a 3 race,” Britton said.

“And the owner of the dog, Neville (Loechel), he's the president of the club.

“So he'll have all of his family down there. It'd make it a great night for him.

“By all the times last week it should be very close. There's not much between the field.”

While the consistent Britton is currently third in the trainers' race in Victoria with 240 wins in the state over the past 12 months, he was humble when asked about his runners currently in work.

Indeed, his bitch is in fine form.

She celebrated her third birthday with a second place to Steve Withers' in the $142,500 Group 1 Galaxy at on Saturday night.

“Hopefully she can live up to what she's been doing on the eastern states,” Britton said before the race.

“I've got a lot of pups coming through with a fairly big changeover in the kennel.

“So it (getting wins) has been a bit thin lately, but Mepunga Ruby is a dog who has kept me going until the next batch comes through.

“Hopefully in a couple months' time I might have a few more.”
