Keybow Unlocks Top Honours In The Group One Brisbane Cup
Keybow (7) has finally cracked his second Group One victory following a tenacious performance in tonight’s Brisbane Cup at Albion Park.
Stepping a touch slow from box seven, the son of Take The Kitty and Key Exit was given a bit of room to move early when Fusaichi Kahn (6) crashed left just after the start.
Despite Kiss Me Ketut (8) racing stride for stride with him in the run to the winning post on the first occasion, Keybow was able to muster pace and slip into a handy position behind lamplighter You Can Talk (3) around the first turn.
Entering the back straight and Keybow loomed up beside You Can Talk, eyeballing the leader as they both chased with all their might. Halfway down the back and the Perth Cup winner looked to be in a spot of danger as Fusaichi Kahn applied pressure three wide with Kiss Me Ketut hot on the leaders heels in fourth position.
But Keybow dug deep and showed his class, pushing his way from between the Queensland pair and striding a length clear around the home turn. As he stormed to the line, Keybow extended his lead to two and three quarter lengths in a time of 29.98.
Fusaichi Kahn ran a terrific race to nail second for Glenda Dart while Kiss Me Ketut, last year’s Brisbane Cup winner, lost no supporters back in third.
Trained by Darren McDonald and owned by Kel Lean, Keybow has now won 18 of his 38 starts with the $75,000 winner’s cheque taking his earnings beyond $480,000. It was the seventh Group final he has contested during his career and, amazingly, Keybow has been in the money on six of those occasions.
He is now expected to head towards the Group Two Cranbourne Cup, which he finished second in last year, before heading to Wentworth Park for the 2015 Group One Paws of Thunder in January.
