Lord double-take in Newcastle Cup heats

In-form trainers Jodie and Andy Lord continued their winning ways on Friday night at The Gardens, taking out both heats of the time-honoured Newcastle Cup over 715m.

Last week's Group 1 Bold Trease winner Stagger Out Lee and runner-up Cawbourne Magic stepped out in heat one, providing a fascinating duel at the finish with the Lords' chaser saluting by 0.75 lengths in a slick time of 41.60, with the being 41.40.

It was another incredible effort from the son of Fernando Bale and Cawbourne Ruby, notching up his 15th career victory having taken out the Middle Distance Championship just two and half weeks ago, prior to his Melbourne campaign.

Stagger Out Lee will take her place in the final along with third and fourth placegetters and Ziggy Stardust.

As expected, Our Amelia jumped smartly and led early on in heat two, before Silver Luck took control heading into the back straight, saluting by a length at the finish in 41.84.

Local chaser You Know Tree was gallant in defeat, running the race of her life to finish second as a $23 outsider of the field.

Our Amelia and placed third and fourth, respectively, both qualifying for next week's final.

Next week's victor will join the likes of track-record holder Cool Bourbski, Here's Tears and Just Terms on the honour roll.
