Despite Our Amelia qualifying for the Newcastle Cup Final at The Gardens this Friday night, top Sydney trainer Jason Magri admits the two-year-old's heat run did not quite meet his expectations.

She finished third in a time of 42.16 seconds over the 715m journey in Heat 2, leading up to the second turn from box four.

That was where Silver Luck overtook her for Andy Lord, his three-year-old going on to salute by a length in 41.84 seconds.

On yet another great night for Andy and Jodie Lord, the fast-developing also won Heat 1 in 41.60 seconds.

With her last start before last Friday night's heat being an impressive victory over 622m in a time of 35.58 seconds at , Magri experienced a little bit of a letdown in emotions from Our Amelia's performance at Newcastle.

“It was her first race over 700m and I was a bit disappointed, actually,” he told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“I thought she'd lead for a bit further.

“She was gone by the time she got to the catching pen, which I thought was a bit disappointing.

“I'm hoping she improves this week.”

Magri took high hopes regarding his $2.30 favourite into her heat at The Gardens.

“Her last 600 at Richmond (over 622m) she ran a 35.58. She hit the line well,” he said.

“I just thought she'd be out in front for a fair bit, but she got ran down.

“I was really disappointed with the run.”

On the flipside, the Lords were delighted to get both winners from the heats.

Andy Lord said before last Friday night that Cawbourne Magic had the look of a quality stayer from the moment he first laid eyes on the now two-year-old.

“He's always been a good dog. We picked him from day one to be a stayer, and the next six months he'll be in his prime,” he said.

“I think there are some good races in him.

“I said to (The Dogs presenter) Mark Duclos after his maiden win at Goulburn that he'll stay all day, this dog.

“Sometimes you just have an eye for them with the ones you think will stay.

“He's just that type of dog.”
