Miata Chases A Fourth Group 1 In Bold Trease Final

Super star reminded greyhound fans everywhere why she is the country’s best stayer with a brilliant win in her heat of the Solo Bold Trease at Sandown Park tonight.

Making her first start at the Lightwood Road circuit since her shock defeat in the 1 RSN in May, Miata was sent to the a $1.20 favourite – the 32nd time in her 40 starts that she had started shorter than $1.50 – and gave punters no cause for concern, taking an early lead and winning by 8½ lengths in a slick 41.80 seconds.

It was the Western Australian’s first start in three weeks and trainer Paul Stuart believes she has plenty of improvement in her for next Thursday night’s $100,000 to the winner final.

“She’s puffing a little bit so she’ll get a lot out of that run,” said Stuart immediately after the run.

“She hasn’t had much trialling or racing over the last few weeks, so hopefully she trims down a little next week and she’ll be spot on. There’s nothing like race fitness.”

Miata’s biggest danger to claiming a fourth Group 1 title appears to be Jethro after the Kel Greenough trained chaser broke the first and second split records on his way to a four length win in 41.93 seconds.

Jethro claimed the Group 1 final over 600m at The 10 days ago, and was stepping up the ‘half-mile’ trip for the first time since an eye catching third behind Miata in the Championship in August.

“He’ll improve a lot after that run,” said trainer Kel Greenough.

“It’s been hard to get the miles in the legs for this series after he went so well at the Meadows. Ten days is not a long time to stretch him out another 100 metres, so I’m sure he’ll get a lot out of tonight’s run and be stronger again in the final.”

The upset of the night came in the night’s opening heat when star New South Wales stayer was run down by Mimicking.

Lektra Jay led for the first lap before He Knows Uno moved to the lead coming off the back straight. However Mimicking had the perfect run throughout the race and ran down He Knows Uno in the run to the line.

“No excuses, the other dog was better on the night,” said Mick Patterson, trainer of He Knows Uno.

“But we’re through to next week and that’s the main thing.”

The Solo Bold Trease honours AGRA Hall of Fame greyhound Bold Trease, a four time winner of the club’s flagship staying event, the Sandown Cup.
