Perth Cup Final: Mepunga Tully scratched, Deadly Avenger firming

Mepunga Tully has been scratched from the 2025 Group 1 Perth Cup Final, leaving the $150,000-to-the-winner event without one of its key contenders.
The Jeff Britton-trained star had been a major player in the race after her dominant 29.48 heat win, but connections have opted to withdraw her from Saturday night’s feature at Cannington.
With Mepunga Tully out, Deadly Avenger has firmed into the $2.05 favourite with the top greyhound bookmakers.
The Steve Withers-trained chaser was electric in his heat, posting 29.52 from box three, and now looms as the one to beat.
Drawn perfectly in box one, Deadly Avenger’s explosive early speed makes him a major threat, and Withers is confident his charge is primed for the occasion.
Boracay Summer, the fastest heat qualifier in 29.42, remains a key contender, while Miss Envy (29.58) and Vincent Bale (29.81) also enter the final with strong credentials.
The race now shapes as an intriguing battle with Mepunga Tully’s absence shifting the market and race dynamics.
Withers, who won last year’s Perth Cup with Uncle Tommy, is in the box seat to go back-to-back with Deadly Avenger, as all eyes turn to Cannington for what promises to be a thrilling final.
