QLD Winter Greyhound Racing Carnival unveils 2024 spectacle

Queensland greyhound racing announces Winter Carnival

The upcoming Queensland Winter Greyhound Racing Carnival in 2024 is set to be an anticipated event, highlighted by the $1 million Sky Racing Brisbane Cup.

This renowned competition marks the finale of the nation’s Winter Carnival, offering a total of over $3 million in prize money over seven weeks of thrilling races from May 23 to July 4 at Albion Park.

The main attraction of the evening will be the $260,000 Group 1 Queensland Cup for stayers, along with two Brisbane Cup consolations totalling $157,500.

Both the Brisbane Cup and Queensland Cup will take place on July 4, offering $1.5 million in prize money on one of greyhound racing’s most significant nights.

To ensure a level playing field, participating greyhounds must have racing experience at Albion Park covering a distance of 520m or more to qualify for the Brisbane Cup heats.

Adequate opportunities will be provided for dogs to get accustomed to the track conditions.

In a breaking development for 2024, the Flying Amy Classic, Queensland’s richest event for greyhounds, will be upgraded to Group 1 status.

Exclusive to greyhounds aged 30 months or younger, this feature race with a prize pool of $225,000 is scheduled for June 6.

In a heartwarming tribute, the Chase event at Group 2 Carnival will be renamed Cyndies Magic in honour of a greyhound from Queensland.

This special race, held alongside the Flying Amy on June 6, celebrates the legacy of Cyndies Magic, a dog with a record of 45 wins from 152 races before transitioning to a successful breeding role.

Jason Scott, CEO of Racing Queensland, expressed that the Queensland Winter Greyhound Racing Carnival has become a gathering ground for some of Australia’s greyhounds who are drawn to the Sunshine State.

While the Brisbane Cup holds its status, there is excitement in elevating the Flying Amy to Group 1 level and paying tribute to Cyndies Magic as a hero in racing.

The Origin Greyhound event, gaining prominence on the racing calendar, is set for June 13.

Featuring competitions like Origin Sprint and Origin Distance for $150,000 each.

Additionally, there will be a $60,000 two-dog match race where contenders selected by Queensland and NSW will compete head-to-head.

To kick off the Carnival with flair, the QGOLD feature evening returns, showcasing talents bred and born in Queensland.

This exclusive event offers over $200,000 in prize money across eight races.

The anticipated ‘Super Night’ scheduled for June 20 will feature races from all five distances held at Albion Park, concluding with the $107,825 Super Stayers Invitational event now upgraded to Group 2 status.

The upcoming 2024 Queensland Winter Greyhound Racing Carnival offers an experience for all.

With a variety of races designed to suit every type of greyhound, this carnival is poised to be a celebration of the sport.
