Stewards wrap: 12 month ban for failing to get veterinary care

Stewards' wrap

KEMPSEY trainer has been banned from greyhound racing for a year for failing to provide veterinary care for one of his injured greyhounds.

On May 29, 2017, Goodwin was found guilty of an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 and fined $1,200, with Greyhound () subsequently an inquiry.

The inquiry panel established that Goodwin had failed to provide veterinary care to the greyhound for 18 days following its injury, with the greyhound requiring treatment to clear an infection and two surgeries to tend to its wounds.

Goodwin was charged with a breach of Greyhounds Australasia Rule 95(8)(a) and, after receiving submissions from Goodwin, was handed down the disqualification.

Camilleri disqualified

Robert Camilleri has been banned by the Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RADB) after one of his greyhounds, Barb Allen, returned a positive urine sample to the prohibited substances Buprenorphine and Norbuprenorphine when competing at Warrnambool on January 7, 2017.

Camilleri pleaded guilty to a breach of GAR 83(2)(3) and submitted that he believed the greyhound was drugged by Charlie Wilson who he alleged had broken into his kennels.

This allegation was unsubstantiated, with the RADB subsequently handing down a 12 month disqualification, with nine months suspended pending no further breaches of the prohibited substances rule in the next 18 months.

Camilleri’s penalty will commence on August 27, 2017.

Ban for Cowcher

Broadford trainer Gary Cowcher recently fronted a RADB inquiry charged with a breach of the prohibited substances rule GAR 83(2)(3) and for failing to present treatment records on request under GAR 84A(1).

The first charge was in relation to a urine sample obtained from the greyhound Go Go Treetment which tested positive for amphetamine when it competed at The Meadows on February 8, 2017.

Cowcher pleaded guilty and gave evidence that his son was an ice addict who helped him pack the meat which was fed to his greyhounds.

Stewards decided to impose a 12-month disqualification with eight months suspended for 24 months pending no further breaches of GAR 83.

Go Go Treetment was also disqualified from the event in question.

Queensland participant suspended from racing

Queensland trainer will be unable to race his greyhounds until he brings his kennels up to standard under Local Rule 27.

The ‘suspension’ was imposed following a series of kennel inspections undertaken by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission () stewards who identified that the standard of his kennelling was hazardous and detrimental to the welfare of his greyhounds – with no bedding provided for any of the dogs.

Stewards also observed a greyhound which was displaying signs of fear and retreated into its kennel. The unnamed greyhound, which was also unregistered, was later seized by Inspectors.

On August 7, 2017, stewards contacted Heath more than two months after their original inspection and informed Heath that his greyhounds would be scratched from upcoming engagements and that he would be unable to nominate any other greyhounds until his kennels comply with LR 27.
