Unheralded greyhound Super Scrub took out the 2024 Group 3 Brisbane Young Guns final at Albion Park on Thursday night, May 9, 2024.

The -trained greyhound was sent to the boxes as a +1400 outsider at greyhound betting sites but that quote proved to be over the odds when Super Scrub was able to lead at the winning post the first time.

Impressive Young Guns heat winners, (+120), Kahlo Hayze (+290) and Warm Cockles (+360), were the only runners under double figures odds with greyhound bookmakers, but all three finished in the back half of the field after poor beginnings and interference.

Despite racing in his first black-type final, Super Scrub was able to race up outside early leader Kia Kaha from box six, and assume control of the race into the first corner.

From that point, the son of Fernando Bale and Nan's Magic was always going to take plenty of running down on the rain-affected track.

Super Scrub withstood a late charge from recent Listed Eric Thomson Memorial winner, , to go on and claim the $30,000 to-the-winner Brisbane Young Guns title in 30.21.

Golden Bear finished second, just 0.13 lengths from the winner, while Kia Kaha held on for third, a further 1.87 lengths away.

Bred, owned and trained by the Elson family, Super Scrub took his record to 13 wins and six placings from 30 career starts.

The 32kg black dog has now earned the Elsons $77,970 in prizemoney.

Super Scrub has won 10 of 13 races from the five outside boxes, and Elson was confident he would run well from the box seven draw, saying, “He likes to get a bit wide in his races, and the seven suited him.”

Elson will now target Super Scrub toward feature races during the Queensland Winter Carnival, including the QGOLD series and the Classic.
