Greyhound ’s Great Chase series will be bigger and better than ever in 2008.

Thanks largely to the introduction of Tabcorp as the major sponsor, an extra $18,000 will be distributed among the community groups that participate in the series via funds injected by 34 local TABs.

This was the biggest news to emerge from today’s launch of the 2008 Great Chase series and, as part of the sponsorship, the event has been renamed , Proudly Supported by your local TAB.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing, said… “I would like to congratulate for its innovative approach to supporting people with disabilities. It’s a personal joy to me to see the happiness the Great Chase series has brought so many”, Minister Hulls said.

Elmer Funke Kupper, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tabcorp, is excited to be on board… “Greyhound Racing Victoria and the TAB have a strong partnership. And it is therefore only natural that we get together and support the communities within which we live and work”, said Mr. Funke Kupper.

Entering its sixth year, this annual state wide three-week community racing event will run from November 5-26, and it is aimed at providing groups that cater for the physically or intellectually disabled the opportunity to have an enjoyable social outing that provides free entertainment and the opportunity to win funds for the group.

The groups are randomly matched to greyhounds that compete in the series and are invited on course to watch their greyhound race while enjoying free dining and merchandise.

Approximately 35 heats will be run across Victoria’s 14 racetracks in the first week of the series, with the groups matched to the heat winners to receive $500 in prize money (an increase of $350 from last year). Thirty two greyhounds will then progress to the second week to contest eight Provincial Finals across four tracks – & Warrnambool (both November 18), plus & Shepparton (November 19). The groups matched to the eight Provincial Final winners will receive a further $1,000 (an increase of $500).

The eight Provincial Final winners will then progress through to the Great Chase Grand Final at The (20km of Melbourne) on November 26. The group matched to the Grand final winner will receive a further $5,000 (an increase of $2,000), with $2,000 and $1,000 to go to the groups matched to the second and third placed greyhounds. The Grand Final winning group will also receive the equivalent of 10% of their greyhound’s prize money for 12 months.
