Visitor’s Boxes A Bad Draw At Cowra Greyhounds

Drawing in boxes three through six was almost a death knell at the Greyhound Club meeting on Saturday. Out of the 10 races contested, all winners came from the clutch boxes of one, two, seven and eight.

And the draw was no more crucial to the outcome than in the four heats of the Mad Maiden Series.

Jan and Ronald Steel's Wellington chasers again showed their liking for the Cowra loam when three of their kennel qualified for the final.

Two of them, Express Cargo and Bond Crete Cargo were runners-up in their respective races, but did enough to advance after the 327 metre trips.

was a winner for the Steels in a pedestrian 19.47.

Pamela Braddon's Mr Topaz was a crushing 7½ length winner in the third heat, scorching home in a slick 19.13 ahead of Bond Crete Cargo.

Rod McDonald's was just as impressive, winning in a time only 0.01 of a second outside of Mr Topaz's.

Provided with another favourable alley, Arguing Jake will be hard to beat in the final.

Young-based pup out of Geoffrey Sheather's kennels was also a solid winner by three lengths.

But the highlight of the meet came when McDonald's Dana gave the five-year-old 327 metre a slight shake in the McLeans Bricklaying Stakes.

scorched out of the eight box to win in 18.75 – only 0.15 of a second outside Petriburg's long-standing mark.

Meanwhile, the Cowra Greyhound Club will take their turn to host a leg of the rich Greyhound Country Challenge when the heats get under way this weekend.

A top line field travelled to Cowra for last year's event which was eventually won by Cowra bitch .

lit up the track in last year's event when smashing the 524 metre track record during the heats, before failing to make an impression in the $8,000 final.
